The Ultimate Music Banter Song Wars
 

Most of the "wars" threads seem to have died slowly, but since I quite like the idea, I thought I'd try it again… with a slight twist. It'll probably fail miserably, but whatever.

Here's the idea. I post a song, and somebody else chooses a song to match against it. We vote as in the other threads, then somebody else then plays the winner. Et cetera. Ideally, this will go on forever and we can all discover some interesting stuff. There will, of course, be a sign-up sheet and rotation.

I'll start us off with one of my favourites, The Doors' "Touch Me".

Okay, I have to ask the question I was asked/demanded of when I started a "Song Wars" thread (which of course died and was buried at sea): how do you compare the songs? I could throw in a Waits, Marillion, Maiden or Perry Como song, but how do you rate that against a Doors one? On what criteria do you judge the two? Not trying to be a dick (I've already mastered that art!) :D but just wondering how it's supposed to work.

I'm not a fan of the Doors at all, but that WEG song sounds like something Tim Burton would put together. I'm an even bigger non-fan of Tim Burton, so:

I am judging the songs. My opinion dictates which song wins.

Ok so someone plays the winner, but how does another game start? Or can voting be isolated games? So if I post a song would that be a totally separate voting battle to yours?

I should also mention that the winner doesn't pick a new song; he continues with the same one until it's defeated.

Just noticed this thread, Pet_Sounds - I hope it goes well, and yes, please sign me up, ok?

Touch Me is way down on my list of Doors songs tbh. It´s a Krieger composition, I think, and the lyrics really sufferwithout any subversive Morrison input. so I was all poised to vote for WEG, which starts promisingly, but then at about 3:50 it starts sounding like a cd that´s skipping to me. I wonder if that´s intentional? Either way, I found it so exasperating that I couldn´t make it to the end of the song.

So, by default and rather ungraciously, I give my vote to Touch Me, which makes it:-

World's End Girlfriend is obviously > The Doors so I vote for that.

"Touch Me" is my favorite Doors song but that's just because it's hilariously dumb. Anyway, add me to the list?

Too bad, the song doesn't make sense if you don't listen to the whole thing. I'd prefer "Touch Me" too if it weren't for that ending, which just so happens to be the best moment in the history of sound.

That's annoying tho because having to wait until defeat makes it hard for other people to get in their songs and keep the game fresh

I didn't like both songs all that much, I'm not a fan of rock in general and the WEG track was just far too long and monotonous. However I preferred the WEG track just for it's sound I guess, and the genre it falls into is more my thing so it gets my vote. :yeah:

should've just had the video start at 7:15, then maybe it'd have more interest.

On the strength of your enthusiasm, I just gave it another go, Mondo B - I even made it through the full 13 mins ! It certainly sounded better, complete and second time round. In fact, I was intrigued enough to listen to the WEG song Les Enfants du Paradise , which is pretty cool too, and comes with a nice dance video on youtube.

while i do very much enjoy The Doors and even that particular more pop side of them....the World's End Girlfriend song was exceptional :)

After a couple of listens, I feel that the WEG song isn't quite interesting enough to sustain its 13-minute length, so I'm going to go for the Baths one from grtwhtgvty - it's short, easy on the ear, but with some nice, intricate details too. Plus I played it to my son and he approved of it!

I've never listened to World's End Girlfriend and the song sounds interesting, but I already enjoy the Baths song. I'd have to spend a good hour with the WEG song to decide if I really enjoyed it.
