You're high as **** aren't you? Did you even listen to the song? Hackett's guitar work alone was totally groundbreaking at the time.

Fripp was definitely listening to early Genesis.

I'm flattered that you think my insults are fresh.

The problem with identifying early Genesis as avant garde is that they never explored dissonance, atonality, or any kind of sonic brutality (at least not to any substantial depth). So in that regard, Chula, you're overreaching. However, Frownland, I think you're depriving yourself of some great music by insisting on these qualities as some kind of litmus test. I know you can point out sucky things about Genesis and if you only look at them through those goggles that's all you're going to see. However, I think you're doing yourself a disservice because if you focus on what they do offer instead of what they don't you'll find they really are a great band. Obviously, you can take that or leave it or maybe even save it for later but that's coming from someone who has loved experimental and atonal music since my early teens.

I've disliked them long before I gave Chula **** about them, mate. Dissonance isn't a necessity for me (even though I really dig it), but being interesting is the main drive behind music I like. Genesis fulfills neither of those things.

Their live shows would be really cool to attend though. Not only because of the theatrics, but because they sound so sterile in their studio recordings and I know that they're great musicians, so seeing them in real time would counter that effect of their albums.

I understand that it's only possible to discuss our own personal reactions to any kind of music so perhaps clarifying that you're expressing your own opinion is redundant and unnecessary and even bad writing but I still think it's unfair to blanket statement Genesis as "uninteresting". It's hypocritical of me because I do the same thing with music I don't like (like Kanye West) but since I like Genesis I want you to put a qualifier on "uninteresting". LOL. OK I think it's really time for me to give up here. I think I'm getting loopy.

Kanye West is (mostly) awful and lame, so maybe you're halfway on your journey to taste as good as mine.

And once again there's this discussion about Genesis and once again I have to insert the majestic Firth Of Fifth here.
I actually even thought of it when I read the OP.
