Oh cause I saw that movie a dozen times, and I was going to say I don't remember that line about art and folk music.

Technically Country and Western allude to two different types of music that was popular back then. Country would be stuff by Ernest Tubb and Western (Swing) would be music by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys.

This is what I like to listen to, depending on my mood. I left out nonsense genres like proto-Punk, proto-Metal, Yatch Rock, Dad Rock, and Freakfolk, which I really don't listen to. I try to avoid the terms like indie, world music and Freakbeat, which I sometimes listen to. I don't care for the term "Twee" but I listed it anyway.
A lot of those are sub genres. Just say oh Ilike plenty of things, such as jazz, rock, blues, soul, reggae and more. Now you have a starting point, and if none of those genres interest the other dude he can ask for a few more.

But didn't they say that to the redneck who own the Country Western bar? They would be the only two types of music he would listen to, Country music and Western Swing. I think thinking off the cuff, BS-ing him and playing to his close mindedness was the joke.

Nope. Folk music would be traditional music or music that uses a traditional structure (ex. dance music, religious music, pop music). Art music would be music that defies those conventions (ex. classical, jazz, experimental music).
