I mean I guess I'm just exaggerating really. It's certainly not the worst album ever made but jesus is it off from the rest of their stuff. I guess it was caught up in the times it came up in with cruise/caribbean music and culture being pretty big but it just ain't my thing.

I actually think it's one of their best albums. Lyrically, it's one of their most bitingly ironic—including the song you just posted, which involves him singing cheerily about a guy drowning in a river. And musically it's the realization of what they had been driving toward their entire career. While there is some Caribbean influence, I don't really see how it's "cruise music". Its primary influences are Brazilian Tropicália and west African Highlife on side one and American roots music on side two. And the final track is really bleak.

Me and my friend listened to the first half after buying it at the record store on CD and couldn't shake how much it sounded like cruise music. I mean I guess I'm missing something that you see but it's all just tedious melodies to me that go nowhere in particular.

It sounds like one thing you're missing is the percussion, which is pretty fantastic.

Also, listen to the second half. I think Tropicália, Bossa Nova, Highlife, and Afrobeat are amazing genres of music and are really worth checking out—and they had a big influence on Talking Heads throughout their career—but if that's not your speed, you'll find that the second half has a pretty different style from the first half.

I mean what kind of cruise would they play this on?

I mean as do I, but this album just comes off as a bit stale to me. I'll keep trying I suppose then since you're determined. Earlier the afrobeat influences seemed more fluid though while on this album it's more latin and Caribbean influenced I think.
