After a spoken intro in German we're introduced to the singing voice of South African-born German vocalist Joy Denalane, and it's very soulful indeed. Certainly not throwaway pop; more mature, elements of adult contemporary in there I would think, also a nice mix of soul and some soft jazz, however here's the problem. It isn't keeping my attention. I don't think it's a bad album, by any means, but it's not speaking to me, and I don't mean because I can't understand the language. All right, she just brought in a child's voice and now I'm done. But goddamit, the next track is a nice slow bluesy type ballad, so **** it, I'll hang on for now. Next track is great too, until some rapper (I assume) gets in on the act. Overall, I'd have to say a pretty meh album, but at least I lasted to the end, and that's no mean feat, with eighteen tracks on it. It gets better near the end, but by then I really don't care and have already posted my review.

Oh, so this is not DJ Khalid, then? Ok. Also, I for some reason thought this was a hip-hop album, but the guy is singing and ... yeah, it's an r&b one. Good start anyway, I like this first track. And the next one. Oh I'm really getting into this. This is sweet, laidback soul sung the way it should be. “Another Bad Love Song” is anything but, and “8TEEN” is a joyous celebration of being young, just a real good-time song. This guy is a real talent. Very impressed. Is this, however (someone who would be more in the know than me) a new trend, using a high-pitched, presumably sped-up voice in songs? It's quite annoying, like having a chipmunk on backing vox. My only complaint though, and not even a real one. I love this album.

Jesus Christ! There are no less than three bands with this name! How do you decide to name your band Mallory Knox? Am I missing something? There's a Spanish band with the name, and an Italian one. These are English. Oh, okay, I see: she's a character in Natural Born Killers. Never saw it. Well they seem to be a decent band, but the first track that catches my attention is “For You”, which is four tracks in. Kind of hard to get excited about this though. It's all right, nothing wrong with it, but my boat remains firmly anchored at the jetty, I'm afraid.

Lord, I find it difficult to come up with anything to say about this album so far, other than that the band have a vaguely interesting name. “Femme Maison/One Man House” has a Lightning Seeds feel about it, and the austere acoustic nature of “Act of Contrition” has a lot going for it. Overall though, it's just another in a line of ok albums. Nothing great, nothing terrible. Meh.

Lordy! More indie and/or alt-rock! Someone give me some K-Pop! Nah, just joking not really. Is it just me, or are all these bands sounding the same? Is indie rock really this boring? Surely there's better than this? And many other questions. Yeah, again, I don't think this is a particularly bad album, but it just doesn't interest me. At all. The only thing about this that makes any sort of impression on me is about the last minute of the last track. That can't be a good sign.
