So far this is really good. Started off harsh and angry (but great) with very dark undertones and has now gone on to basic soul/r&b a la Smokey. Cool. Oh, I see it's called “Marvin” and features CeeLo Green. Well, that explains it, but still cool as ****. “My Corner” returns to the hard-hitting dark energy, while the organ in “M&N” bites your face off! Prince-style then for “Visiting Hour” with some lovely sprinkly piano/keyboard and back hitting hard with “The Reign”. Good stuff, enjoyed it all. Word.

This is just a great album. Got to love the power of gospel music; even if you're not a believer, it just gets you happy. Great soul tunes, great pipes, very simple and sincere, no airs here. Holy good crap! She's covering “War Pigs”! Great job, too. That was unexpected. Harmonica works really well here in place of Iommi's growling guitar. Total change of pace then with a bluegrass tune and then a beautiful ballad before we finish up with, well, another ballad, but just as beautiful. An almost perfect album.

**** it: a perfect album. Just superb. Miss it at your peril.

This is pretty decent stuff so far. Nothing I hate anyway. Like the keyboard work on the first few tracks, and there's a good sense of energy about most of it. Quite catchy songs too. In fairness, “Song 19” is – what's the technical term? - ****, but it's very much the exception and the quality is soon restored with “I'm Not a Punk”, and really it doesn't drop again. “Mental Case” is one of the highlights of a very impressive final few tracks. Really enjoyed this album.

Time once again to take a step off the beaten path and retrace my steps back to the previous month, as some of you choose albums for me to listen to from February which are

Interesting title; sounds a little Velvet Underground-y when it opens, slow, melancholy kind of song then the next one is more uptempo, though still with a sad, morose kind of vocal. I would have to say that generally speaking, my overall reaction is boredom. It's very low-key (yes I know there's shoegaze in there but still), the production on the vocals seems to be very hollow, and it really just hasn't grabbed me in any way so far (now on track six of ten), though there's some vocal relief when a female voice with some personality takes things for “Persistent Stable Hell”, which is actually a good song. Then moany arse is back for the next one, and I lose interest again. And now there's only one track to go. Actually this isn't bad, but it's in spite of, not due to, his droning, boring singing. And the last track is great, with a very Nick Cave piano feel, not to mention the singer speaks the lines instead of singing them, which makes it so much more listenable.

When I racked this up I for some reason expected a jazz album – name just seems like it might be connected to that genre, to say nothing of the album title – but when I realised it was one of the guys from the Antlers I was a lot more relaxed, and as it begins I think I may really like this album. I loved Hospice and Familiars, so I'm hoping this will be more of the same, and so far, yes it is. Very relaxed, very kind of sparse, but the vocal of Silberman transcends everything and just pulls at your attention, refusing to be ignored. Sort of reminds me, maybe, of a more low-key Sufjan Stevens. Yeah, that good. Oh, this is one beautiful album. “Gone Beyond” is one of the loveliest lullabyes I've ever heard. Ever.

Hell, it's almost redundant to reduce this album to its component parts. Songs don't quite matter: this is a benison for the soul, soft, gentle waves of calm washing over you like the sweetest breeze or the lightest surf, leaving you refreshed, slightly shaken and feeling a whole lot better. Not quite Hospice (as if anything could be) but very, very close. Or to put it another way, you got me, Ped: ****ing top notch album. :thumb:

Last one for now before we head back to the main list. Nice pleasant sound, good uptempo rock, sort of new-wavey in a Blondie kind of way, very catchy so far anyway. This is really a fun album. It's simple, straigh forward, catchy, upbeat and cheerful. Can't argue with that. If I had a complaint, it would be a small one, and it's this: that most of the songs do sound somewhat the same. Still, they're all good, so as I say it's not really much of a complaint.

Check out more from this artist? I think I'd want to hear some more variety, but maybe
