Recommender: Goofle
Label: Tiger Trax
Artist: Nadia Oh
Title: Colours
Genre: Dance-Pop, Electropop
Year: 2011

Plug.dj fodder. Shit you play at the Eurovision pre-party with all your gay friends, except no one is gay. You're just on drugs, and everyone is paranoid. So you have to chase Rob down the street in your bare feet because he's bailed, afraid of all the gayness. Perhaps he's only running from himself. You catch him, though, before the cops do and find out he's gay.

Rating: ★★

So you loved it, then? ;)

Nadia Oh - Colours

This was bland and pretty generic.

It hurt my ears to listen to, and was annoying as hell.

A quarter of a star.

I hate this.

1. What were your VERY FIRST impressions on listening to the album, say from the first five minutes in?
I was a bit hesitant.

2. What did you think of the opening track?
It was alright.

3. What did you think of the next track?
It was good.

4. Did you like the vocalist? Hate him/her? Any impressions? (see note 1)
Not bad. She used auto-tune, or whatever they use to modulate the vocals. I am not a fan of it, but I think they employed it better than most do.

5. Did the music (only) generally appeal to you, or not? (see note 2)
Somewhat.

6. Did the album get better or worse as you listened to it (first time)?
I actually thought it got better as it went on. It kept my interest.

7. What did you think of the lyrical content?
I didn't really pay too much attention to the lyrics. It's probably aimed at teenagers.

8. Did you like the instrumental parts? (see note 3)
I dig'd it.

9. What did you think of the production?
Not bad, not bad at all.

10. Did you know of this artiste prior to listening to the album, and if so, did that foreknowledge colour your perception of this album?
No, I didn't know the artist, and I guess I was a bit reluctant to dive into an album, but I gave it a listen any way. I spent a lot of time with Goofle in plug.dj and I am familiar with his taste in music, I kinda knew what to expect. So maybe having a positive opinion of Goofle and his music coloured my perspective a bit.

11. Is this, generally, the kind of music you listen to or not?
No, not really. However there are elements in the music that would be stuff I listen to. I forget what track it is but the backing track sounded like a slow-down version of music by Crystal Copy.

12. Assuming you listened to the album more than once, on repeated listens, did you find you liked the album more, or less?
Only listen to it once.

13. What would you class as your favourite track(s), if you have any?
Maybe Amsterdam??

14. And the one(s) you liked least?
None I can think of.

15. If the album in question is a debut, did that fact allow it, in your mind, any leeway, and if so, was that decision justified or vindicated? (see note 4)
It is the second album. I think she escaped the Sophomore Jinx most bands are burdened with.

16. Are you now looking forward to hearing more from this artiste, if you have not heard any of their other material?
Maybe.

17. Were you surprised by your reaction - positive or negative - to the album?
I spent a lot of time with Goofle Back plug.dj when it was more active. So I know kinda what to expect. So I was surprised he rec another good album. The man is on fire!

18. Did the album end well?
Yeah, I think it did/

19. Do you see any way the album could have been improved?
Less auto-tune. Maybe a tad bit faster pace on some tracks.

20. Do you think the album hung together well, ie was a fully cohesive unit, or was it a bit hit-and-miss?
Yeah, a decent album to put on and do whatever.

Rating: ★★★★ What can I say I liked it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

MicShazam 09-12-2017 05:07 AM

I knew I was going to hate this from the first nasal, heavily auto-tuned seconds. The the beat started and I changed my mind no I'm just kidding. I knew this was going to be punishing.

1. Colours
The verse melody is ripping off some old disco tune or something but I can't remember which. I hate the dumb lyrics, the autotuned vocals, the boring non-hook of a chorus and the lame, low-effort club beat. "I want your rainbow love love love - I want your rainbow love love love". I want a barf bag.

2. Amsterdam
This is everything I hate about club music. Everything. Nothing about this is even remotely bearable.

3. Beauty & a Beast
I really can't stand the singer. She's awful. Ah, ok, so the beauty and the beast is the same person. You see, she's beautiful, but also a beast in bed. My mind is blown. "Raawwwrrr" oh shut up.

4. DJ's Girlfriend
From the very first second: Nope. Just no.

5. Is That You
Is this what they call trap? I'm not sure. Also a vague hint of dubsteb. Still crap, of course.

6. No bueno
Exactly.

7. Jump out the Window
Don't tempt me.

8. Hocus Pocus
Less annoying, but still yawn. I miss Rebecca Black.

9. Shade
Argh! What is up with that corny lead melody in the beginning?! Is this trying to make me grind my teeth?

10. Soopermodel
Seriously! I can't do this anymore! No bull****. This is incredibly annoying music and. I. HATE. it.

11. I Like it Loud
I didn't refer to Rebecca Black before entirely as a joke. I fail to see how this is any better at all. It might be worse.

12. Taking Over the Dancefloor
Set this album to half the speed and play it in reverse and I'm convinced it would be an improvement. This is music for mouth breathing bro dudes with reverse caps on doing beer bongs. That one was a joke. I don't hold liking this against anyone but I really, really, really cannot stand it myself. The bit about reversing it was no joke. It would absolutely make this cringefest less annoying.

13. So Unforgettable
That sounds like a threat.

14. Follow Me
Sorry, Nadia, never again.

Made it one time through and I will never hear this again if I can help it.
1/10 but I want to be childish and say -10/10. Hated every cursed second. Sorry Goofle, so, so sorry.

^ You beat me to it!

That review pretty much says almost everything I was going to say about this one. The album represents everything I despise about modern pop and club/dance music. I couldn't make it through more than 20 to 30 seconds of a single track from the album. Mind-numbingly annoying and awful.

1/10

innerspaceboy 09-12-2017 02:31 PM

I try really hard to maintain a positive lens for the works I review. I like to think that art has merit to someone, somewhere, so it is not my place to condemn it or to pass judgment. I generally gravitate toward pieces which speak to me personally or which resonate with my value set so that I can highlight strengths of a given work and inspire others who might similarly enjoy it.

And then there’s this record.

I can appreciate Serrano’s The Piss Christ. I can appreciate that mall pop speaks to a particular demographic which is exploring and developing their personal and associative identities. I can acknowledge that value and beauty are in the eye of the beholder and respect that perspective among my fellow man as equals in a humanitarian scope.

And then there’s this record.

But I shall not lower or compromise myself to derisive scoffing at it as an inferior work. I may find its superficiality reprehensible, its production quality sonically offensive, the banality of its cookie-cutter lyricism tiresome and ubiquitous, and the general presentation indolent and ineffectual, but that is only the album as it relates to my own personal passions and pursuits.

I did, however, find value in this record as being quite exemplary of the culture described by Guy Debord in Society of the Spectacle which I’d finished reading just moments before cueing up this week’s listen. I believe my reactionary summary of the text serves as the most revealing insight into the impression this album had upon me. So I’ll leave it at that for your interpretation.

Not my bag, but maybe it’s yours. Or maybe it’s exquisitely demonstrative of the systemic erosion of our cultural competence in a late-capitalist nightmare world of banality and conspicuous consumption.

You decide.

Trollheart 09-12-2017 03:14 PM

Might as well get this one over with. If I believe the general reaction to it here, I'm not going to be bothering Mister Matrix this week. And from the opener, I hate it. Jesus. ****ing autotune and crappy nineties house beats? Again, Jesus. Club music at its worst? Do you have to be on ecstasy to enjoy/endure this, or is it just good to dance to and not really listen to? Sounds like the Smash Monsters – remember them? No? **** you then. And **** this album. Goof, what possessed ya? You usually have such decent taste. This is beyond poor. The second track she doesn't even try to sing, just sings-like-a-robot- like-this. ****. The lyric is beyond poor. I know I said that already. I don't care; I don't feel like putting effort into this. If she won't put effort into her music why should I put effort into writing about it? Oh god save me, if only you existed, which sadly you don't so I'm ****ed.

We're only three tracks in. I'm never going to last fourteen! I agree with the pathetic “roar” - sounds like a kitten or something. ****'s sake. “She's phenomenal, like an animal”? Really? Oh look! From Wiki: she has been inactive in music and most likely retired from releasing music. Let's ****ing hope so! This is so juvenile, puerile, it's worse than the very worst amateur crap the X Factor can turn out, and that's saying something. I'm struggling to make it through the whole thing, but I don't want to insult anyone by not finishing their album. It's a sacrifice though, I'll tell you. Oh wait! This is the re-release I'm listening to on Spotify! The original only has TEN tracks. Let's do that then: four less Nadia Oh tracks is something to be thankful for. That means I'm about more than halfway through. Praise baby Jesus!

“No bueno” is just so ****ing annoying. This is literally like something a ten-year old would record at home – or maybe that's a little unfair. To ten-year-old girls. I'm sure they could put together something much better than this pile of - “You make me wanna jump out the window” - well, as someone else said, don't let me stop you. I might join you. Seriously: what's the ****ing point in that lyric? I hate you so much that I want to kill myself? If not, then what? Oh she's a bad bitch, apparently. Well I agree: very bad for releasing this turdfest upon the world. Oh man: “Jump out the window” just got, somehow, worse, with perhaps the most pathetic and emotionless rap – or attempt at one – that I have ever heard. How much more of this have I to stand? Three more tracks. It's not going to be exact, as there are tracks at the beginning of the re-release that aren't on the original and I've already inadvertently listened to them, but hell with it, I'm stopping at ten tracks either way. Can't make any difference anyway.

“Hocus pocus, you got me losing my focus”? How long did it take you to write that one, Nadia? Did you even write any of this? I don't know. If you did I wouldn't admit to it if I were you. How could they have found SIX singles to release from this? I couldn't even find one track I don't hate. What the blue jumping **** is “Shade” about? One more track and it's over thank Christ. Oh, let's be cool, huh, and spell “Supermodel” wrong. See? It's “Soopermodel”. Aren't I cool? No you ****ing aren't. **** off. Where's that death metal album? I need a drink and a shower.

For the first time EVER in the Album Club, this album gets my lowest rating: 0/10. Goofle, it's possible that you may never hold you head up here again.

Frownland 09-12-2017 05:53 PM

Colours is the second album from renowned rock 'n' roll guitar goddess Nadia Oh. When I put on the album, I was confronted by a bizarre situation: this is not a rock album at all, this is a pop album?!?!?! Why would you ever make a pop album? Why don't you just make a good ole rock n roll or adult contemporary record like a real artist? Why would you release an album if you just up and accidentally sounded like this? Well despite these burning questions and disconcertions, I powered through the album.

Maybe it's because I've been exposed to more of this type of music or something, but y'all are a bit vitriolic on this one to a humorous extent. You're getting mad at Jim Carey for not wearing a suit and talking about stock strategy. You're getting mad at a comic strip artist for not drawing like Da Vinci. This album just happens and passes by without a second thought. I never thought to myself that it was **** apart from the comedically stupid throwing shade line. I did think that it wasn't very memorable and very rarely grabbed me.

There were a few catchy hooks that I wrote down as I listened to the album, and wouldn't you know that together they form a very touching poem? Maybe this was Nadia's message to us all along.

Amsterdam
Is That You
Taking Over the Dancefloor
So Unforgettable

A truly insightful analysis of Dutch EDM. Bumps the album up to a 4/10. I rated it "meh".

This seems like something that would come on during an episode of tim & eric, or as filler between any two shows on adult swim - definitely an unsettling element to it - something a little off

As far as the whole album, I liked the opening track, and there were a couple other fun moments (No Bueno in particular) but most of the time this was really hard to listen to. The beats are bland and generic and the way her voice is mixed and autotuned genuinely started hurting my ears after a while.

3.7/10

MicShazam 09-13-2017 03:31 AM

In respone to Frownlands review: My problem with this isn't that it's pop. It's that it's bad pop. It's some of the worst I've ever heard, really. It really re-frames my dislike of Ke$ha, Perry, Swift, Lily Allen, Spears, and all the other mainstream pop queens from the last decade and a half. They're all easily four times as good as this at their worst.

I didn't compare Nadia Oh to Rebacca Black just to be mean.

There is this looming mustard cloud of negativity in this thread. I think you are missing out on what it is aiming for. It's not Pop like Katy Perry or Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga, nor is it falling short of their caliber of pop - however you want to rank their music. I think it falls more into the category of EMD at least have some the elements or artistic goals of EMD. Take for instance Slapper. It was written and produced by Space Cowboy and picked up and played by DJ Diplo.

I don't think Goofle failed us in any way with his choice. I am very tempted to be swayed by everyone's opinion and doubt my own, but I stick with first impression of the album.

Nadia Oh - Slapper (Ayye)

You don't like it because it's bubblegum bass I think and are expecting different things from pop than what that subgenre offers.
