Votes don't count unless you write at least a sentence or two to go with them.

i hate to be that guy but i still don't "get" the album. it's alright so i gave it a 6, but i just can't seem to understand what the fuss is about that makes everyone love it so much. i've tried, it's just not for me.

Janszoon 02-12-2018 07:02 AM

It's a good album, but not as good as Fear of Music. It's always a bit of a letdown for me when the big hit song is also by far the best song on the album.

grindy 02-12-2018 07:12 AM

It's an amazing and unassailable album.
I prefer the live albums because they are more energetic.
Therefore just a 9/10.
My usual go-to recordings are The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads and the Rome Concert 1980 bootleg.
You should try those, OQB.

Oriphiel 02-12-2018 07:21 AM

I'm waiting for you guys to realize that I'm not Blank, and this album isn't on the list.

Till then...

Remain in Light is pure energy. It is heat in aural form. Those who can't get down with the delicious and frantic psycho funk are clearly assailable in their musical tastes. 10/10

Also, Grindy is right, their live show in Rome is a masterpiece of artistry. For those who haven't seen it, go watch it on youtube.

I have to say, "pure energy" and "heat" are not things associate with albums as low key as Remain in Light.

OccultHawk 02-12-2018 09:18 AM

The release date is important.

This album was an early gold standard for 1980’s pop music. It’s also a post-modern melding of many different styles. 10/10 from me.

Ori, nice work hijacking the thread idea.

Why not? Heat can sizzle slowly just as surely as it can fry in an instant.

This album is dripping with energy, every kind of energy. The only limit is your ability to sense the full spectrum of it.

Why not? Because it's not a high energy album. It has kind of a chilly feel to it to me, both in the production and in the songwriting. Fear of Music is like that too, but it's a superior album. It's not a bad thing—I like a lot of cold albums—it just is what it is.

Everything a snowman touches feels cold.

On songwriting, Byrne's admitted style was to just throw random crap in to fit a sexy beat. And the funky beats on Remain in Light are way more sexy. Try to fit sexiness more into your life, and you'll soon see what I mean. Be a sexy snowman, dripping with cold energy.

Plus, the production on both albums is equally meh compared to their live presence.

Asleep? No. Low key? Yes.

You have fun with that.

Nah, the keys are definitely high. Remain in coldness, Snowman.

Exo 02-12-2018 11:43 AM

Not my favorite TH album but very close. It gets a 9 for having a slightly lacking 2nd half. 1st half is easily a 10. It's an album that does so much in the background. Almost like listening to a Talk Talk album. Great headphones record.

That's not one of my albums. You're getting mixed up, Exo.

I get where Janzs is coming from for about half of the record, but it also has a lot of tracks with percussion that's too busy for me to think of it as low key. It's plainly too exciting.

Philly, I believe.

FaSho 02-12-2018 02:26 PM

It's good don't get me wrong, others have mentioned, there are tons of exciting background elements but it does drag a bit in the second half and Fear of Music is so much better. I do understand why it's the more 'important' record and for the significance factor I'll bump it up from a 7 to an 8

Leave Qwertyy alone. Being a Talking Head's fan aint a ****ing club, where you're cool if you like them and you aint if you don't. That is some ****ing hipster **** right there and don't do it to Talking Heads who are one of of my favorite bands.

PS. STFU

Paedantic Basterd 02-12-2018 11:15 PM

Think I have to agree with everyone else about how the album kind of tapers off after the midpoint, but still, Born Under Punches and Once in a Lifetime are enough to bring me back to this album again and again.

Fun fact, my first exposure to Talking Heads was a cover of Once in a Lifetime on the Muppet Show performed by Kermit the Frog.

Even Kermit's version stuck with me for 20 years after when I finally returned to it via Talking Heads. Great ****in' song, Kermit or not.

You're welcome.

I'd pick a different band to say qwerty isn't cool for liking

The point is your fanboyitis flairs up and you start trippin balls like Chula on Ledsergic Acid Diezeppelinmide. Can't you just chill and let Ol' Qwerty voice an opinion without you judging him?

MicShazam 02-13-2018 12:33 AM

There's definitely a fair bit of that going around - not just in this thread. Don't like what I like? You must be retarded and/or have terrible tastes. It's so hard to live on a planet where everyone doesn't think like me.

Oriphiel 02-13-2018 01:40 AM

I love the second half of this album. Houses in Motion and Seen and Unseen are aural sex. I actually like them more than Once in a Lifetime. Listening Wind is more relevent and impactful today then it was back then. And the Overload is a crushing end to the flames, though the heat goes on after the album is done.

And each song is dripping and burning with energy.

Well, one thing I agree with you about is that side two is the better side. Of the four best songs on the album ("Born Under Punches", "Once In a Lifetime", "Listening Wind", "The Overload"), three are on the flip side.

You do have pretty terrible taste though, people are just kind enough to point that out to you.

Or it's about how some members understand how not to be a self-important knob.
