Your vote only counts if you say something about the album. It doesn't need to be a paragraph, just a couple sentences about the album. Album needs to garner at least ten Votes to earn classic status.

Also, I'll ask mods to delete Votes this time. Just a couple of sentences, that's all. If you don't say anything but vote there will be no warning before the vote is deleted.

Blank. 05-02-2018 08:10 AM

I did it again... can a mod add a poll please.

Exo 05-02-2018 08:17 AM

Dumb mofo. There you go.

Also, Madvillainy...what can be said? It's a genre creating piece of mastery. It's something that can and probably will stand the test of time and I'm glad Madlib and Doom aren't really trying to duplicate it. It stands alone.

There's understanding that this is a masterpiece and there's being wrong. Psyched out, jazzy, busy production, DOOM's flow, one-liners, a comic book reading style, it's one hell of a package. I can't think of anything bad to say about this record, even the skits are good and that's rare as ****. 10/10

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 05-02-2018 10:11 AM

big fan tenner. it’s the pinnacle of what hip hop can be. it’s not as simple as good lyrics, a great beat, or the smoothest flow. it’s bringing all these different elements and inspirations together into a single project.

Frownland 05-02-2018 10:22 AM

inb4 LAMEphenor gives it a 1 because he hates the blacks.

Black Francis 05-02-2018 11:22 AM

Apart from what has been said already, The main reason i keep coming back to this album is DOOM's lyrics. There are tracks i overlooked which recently i realized have great lyrics like Rhinestone Cowboy.

Mmm food is just as good tho.

batlord will also call it hipster rap and give it a 4

Black Francis 05-02-2018 11:59 AM

I gave it an 8. Those 10 i see up there seem very generous to me.

Wait until you see my vote, then you'll choke on your morning coffee!
I'm not voting though as I'm gonna be an Elph and say that I felt like turning it off after a few minutes.

I'm new to this hippity hoppity thing and this album just isn't floating my boat.

It was one of the first hip hop records that I ever listened to and it didn't do much for me as a noob either. Explore the genre a bit more and return to it because it seriously lives up to its status. Also, that Quelle Chris and Jean Grae record is filled to the brim with this album's influence.

I do really like that one. Plus I think I'll get along pretty well with that Phonte record. I'll take it one album at a time. I'm not interested enough in the genre yet to want to jump in deep and listen to all sorts of stuff.

Listen to Frown, it took me awhile to get into this album and to fully appreciate DOOM's style. It helped me to listen to his songs with lyrics on hand, that might help you too.

Just leaving this here:

Trollheart 05-02-2018 03:18 PM

This was one of the albums submitted for my "Get Trollheart Into Hip-hop" thread, so yeah, I'll give it a go in a day or so. Don't expect miracles though. See also: the Gorguts thread.

The best thing about Madvillainy - aside from its factual perfection - is what it inspired and the direction it sent alternative Hip-Hop in. A collab between MC and Producer with seamless production between tracks. An attempt at a completely cohesive stand-alone unit, as opposed to a collection of songs. It had been tried before of course, but the impact is a tad more significant when you're talking about one of the best in both fields hitting their A-game, coming through with the best material of their careers.

This album may be the biggest inspiration for Madvillainy itself though:

Black Francis 05-02-2018 06:23 PM

So you're also giving it a 10?

OccultHawk 05-02-2018 08:06 PM

Wu Tang did it 10 times better 10 years earlier

Frownland 05-02-2018 08:23 PM

Nah. They're ****ing great but this record's a different animal. DOOM's flow and rhyme scheme is wild and lays over the dynamic and abstract beats in an unexpectedly clean way. Plus his character inflection in his storytelling is unique as hell.

Not my favorite jazz / rap album, but a 10 nevertheless. I made black friends because of this album.

Akai 05-03-2018 12:49 AM

Best thing hes ever done along with food and doomsday imo.

The abstract atmos on this is some of the best I've heard on a hip hop record.

Some of the best production, bass lines and sampling I've heard on a hip hop record.

Perfect run time for a hip hop record of this calibre as it doesn't overstay it's welcome.

Some of madlibs best stuff on this thing too.

That's funny cause when they were talking about who's the king of hip hop De La Soul Threw DOOM's name in the ring.

Not that this would matter to you cause you can't differentiate his style from the style of those artist you mentioned. The only comparison i see is that they're in the same genre.

Whatcha make them out of?

As for me, I'm at sea here. I have no knowledge of, experience of nor really interest in what this album/these guys did for hip-hop. You might as well ask me to vote on an influential jazz or punk album. All I can do is listen to it and do an ISB on it: judge it on the merits of what I hear, not the influence it had or anything like that. So my vote may not be too high, but it will be honest. All I can do, guys. This ain't my wheelhouse but I'm gonna give it a shot.

De La Soul broke major ground.

If y’all understood hip hop at all you would realize you’re basically saying is the White Stripes are better than the Stooges.

It’s well done but it doesn’t break any ground. Is Peter Brotzman better than Pharoah Sanders?

These i know and hell no! I'm certainly not saying that, i don't like the white stripes much in fact. Dude you were the one that made this sht a competition coming in with "oh Wu tang and De La Soul" ofc those guys are great im just saying DOOM is great too.

And if you want to talk about breaking new ground, This album was very influential. Mos Def even bought the Vinyl just cause he related so much with the cover.

There's also some vids of Odd Future turning into fanboys when they met DOOM. There's plenty of videos ppl suckin DOOM and Dilla's duck.

OccultHawk 05-03-2018 06:43 AM

It’s not that it’s bad but Mos Def and DLS like it because it pays tribute

I know that Odd Future likes it too and that’s a better argument

OF did something significant to build on it though

That’s why OF, especially Tyler and Earl are far more important artists

OccultHawk 05-03-2018 06:45 AM

Exactly. Most everyone here knows their guitar bands and what’s what

Hip hop? It’s a lot murkier around here

Frownland 05-03-2018 07:25 AM

It soumds like you just don't want people to expand and develop on ideas once someone comes out with them. If that's the case, we should just stop making jazz because Coltrane happened.

This has aged a lot better than Deltron imo. Tribe and Wu still hold up though. Have you ever appreciated more than one artist at the same time?

I also like Brötzmann more than Pharoah Sanders but love Pharoah to death.

Black Francis 05-03-2018 07:57 AM

So now i get to debate DOOM is better than OF. :D
Short answer is.. Yes.

But DOOM is a better rapper. I don't listen to Earl but i do listen to Tyler and while he is good DOOM has got a better pen. Well, that all depends i guess. DOOM is way more subtle than Tyler and has whittier analogies but Tyler goes for the shock value. One of his rhymes that stuck with me goes "Goddamn I love bitches, Especially when they only suck dick and wash dishes" so if you're into that in your face sht over clever penmanship you might prefer Tyler.

Also in terms of impact in hip hop, OF and Tyler gained alot of popularity through their videos while DOOM never really made shocking videos like them. He certainly doesn't have a stronger visual presentation than them but then again he doesn't need it cause his music alone carries his cred.

Frownland 05-03-2018 08:07 AM

Listen to Earl dude, he took the torch. When it comes to Earl v DOOM it's a wash imo.

To me it sounds like you think people who are really just dickriding are leading the way.

Btw, I don’t disrespect what you’re saying about Brotzmann.

Frownland 05-03-2018 08:42 AM

Must be out of your scope or something. Sad!
