Nice thread idea! My immediate thought is neatly summed up by something I just read in a different thread. I hope Janszoon won't mind if I completely subvert his intention by cutting and pasting his post here:-

Perhaps they are not the best, but it's not for want of trying:-

That Go To Heaven album cover is the biggest miss-step in the band's entire career.

You mean apart from their music?

I'd tried to get into them at least a dozen times through the years and it never clicked. Also think Jerry is one of the most overrated guitarists in the rock genre.

American Beauty (beauty which also spells Reality - I guess everyone knows)

Is my favorite cover lettering that I can think of

Favorite band emblem is different

Chula:

You’ve heard Garcia with Grisman I’m assuming...

It’s probably no surprise I love the GD. I think they’re one of the most misunderstood bands of all time.

Most of those honestly have pretty awful typography.

Just can't hang with his tone or reliance on major scale phrasing.

^ Yep, given the way tastes in graphic design have shifted, those Grateful Dead scripts look really dated.

My ten cents is that so far Led Zeppelin are winning this thread. Even this famous dropped "T" can't compete:-

Of course it's really just a logo - invented, I think, by Brian Epstein during a very productive thirty seconds that he spent with the back of an envelope.
