Robbing another of Batty's ideas and putting a slight twist of my own on it. Seems appropriate, given MicShazam's tirade against the genre, that we kick off with this one, my own particular favourite.

So, what do you hate about Prog Rock? Note: nobody should get pissy, butthurt, indignant or precious about their favourite genre if it's featured. Not everyone likes the same things you do, some may even hate them, and anyway this is all supposed to be in fun. So cool your jets and just go with the flow. In another twist on Batty's idea, I'll be putting up a poll, so that we can see which ends up being voted the suckiest genre of all. Poll options will be simple: 1-5, where 1 is you don't hate, may even love the genre, to 5, meaning you'd happily wipe it off the Earth. Oh, and further note: "genre" also includes "sub-genre", but it's a pain to write that in the thread title, so by all means we can do, say Black Metal, IDM, Celtic Punk, Free Jazz etc as separate threads in time.

I hate 90% of this genre and it’s so boring and stupid to me that I dont even have the energy to go on a rant about it

It's the least sexy genre to ever exist.

People had to ask Elvis to stop thrusting his hips. Prog rock doesn't even have a clue how what inspires a man to act like so. Imagine a prog rock band covering Elvis. It would be the worst, most useless thing ever. I hate the autistic vocalists. The endlessly boring instrumental sections that throw in everything and the kitchen sink, but somehow still can't conjure up a single fragment of emotion or energy. The more-often-than-not terrible sounding keyboards and musical combinations that are like the equivalent of slathering all of your perfectly good food in ketchup at every opportunity. "We don't know how to write a good tune, so I guess well just keep noodling until no one can remember who they are or where they came from." Oh, and don't forget to make 90% of all tracks sound syrupy and quaint. Actually, I just generally don't like how prog rock sounds or what it aims to do. |

It depends on the band. Some of it can be pretty pompous (read: Rick Wakeman as a solo artist), but many of the bands like King Crimson and early Yes can be quite innovative. Hawkwind was mentioned in Mic's thread and they're about as good as you can get. So, prog isn't a perfect genre but, as a whole, I like it.

Prog rock stems from progressive rock but 95% of the genre is derivative bull****. What it has to offer is some of the best music ever made, but goddamn you ****in white folk do something new. 7/8 time signatures are officially no longer progressive. King Crimson all day though.
