Does MB have lame tastes?

When it comes to music, MB'ers are a diverse bunch. I consider this a 100% cool thing, but what would the music hipsters of the internet think if they came upon MB while failing to click a Pitchfork link? Are we lame? I know you think I am, but what about in general?

Yes, this thread is retarded. Don't worry about it. That's called par for the course.

Frownland 09-14-2018 12:49 PM

Music hipsters look down on Pitchfork.

MicShazam 09-14-2018 12:50 PM

Then who the **** even reads Pitchfork these days?

Exo 09-14-2018 12:51 PM

Trick question.

Our music taste for the most part is awesome.

Yet we are all still lame.

Idunno man. Who cares?

Aux-In 09-14-2018 12:53 PM

I spend almost no time thinking about how other peoples' tastes are good or bad. I just like people talking about music.

MicShazam 09-14-2018 12:59 PM

Literally all ground is covered among the MB crowd, so there's hardly any lame music that no one in here accepts. We've got acceptance of nu-metal, AOR, adult-contemporary, country, mumble rap, noise rock, jazz fusion, classic rock, mainstream pop musik... it really runs the gamut.

Does that just mean MB as a whole has no standards?

I don't see how a standard could be set, so I'm all for this mess. It's a bunch of non-conformist individuals whose musical tastes more or less match their personalities.

It probably means that about 80% of what is talked about in here is lame as **** if you're a hipster that cares about having/exhibiting refined taste.

Frownland 09-14-2018 01:02 PM

MB as a whole? Don't lump me in with those dickheads.

MicShazam 09-14-2018 01:05 PM

I know, you're a special case.

Blank. 09-14-2018 01:11 PM

Quick answer: Yes

Long Answer: Who cares?

Wannabe hipsters. You know, those people that listen to Tool and then talk about how much they love underground music.

Honestly, saying unironically that you have refined taste is the single lamest thing anyone could say.

Just a bit of fun. It doesn't matter at all. I'm just hoping for some funny hot takes.

MicShazam 09-14-2018 02:16 PM

Unironically enjoying this at the moment. Not Tzuke's strongest album, but it's got a lot of subtle touches to it that makes it work really well when played at night at a solid volume in my living room.

https://open.spotify.com/album/3Q2k67cKDA1VnQlOOHpqQF (warning: totally adult contemporary material ahead)

I don't really understand the impulse to judge others instead of just focusing on doing your own thing. Anyway, I just think the idea of having the right or wrong tastes is interesting. There's a long history of trying to draw lines between high and low culture, shifts of what's "in" or "out" or "cool" among hipsters, etc.

Not that those ideas were why this thread was made. I was just bored and hoped people would start arguing about who's the most lame MB member, musically speaking. So far, so disappointing.

You can easily do both. Everyone forms opinions on others' tastes whether they realize it or not, but it's not like disagreeing with someone or pointing out that they like/dislike something for silly reasons ("this album sucks because there's no xylophone", as an extreme example) is the same as making a value judgement.

Hipsters are hippies are beatnicks are swing kids are youngins. The only differences are generational.

Blank. 09-14-2018 02:30 PM

Judging other people's tastes is just another way we decide if we like someone or not.

I feel like this is a dig at me for disagreements we've had in the past, but I basically agree.

Yep, generational differences.

MicShazam 09-14-2018 02:38 PM

Isn't the hipster mentality also supposed to be that you're into something because it makes you seem cool and on the cutting edge of popular music? (As opposed to being into something because it just tickles your brain and makes you feel joy.)

MicShazam 09-14-2018 02:42 PM

"phish listening"

I don't know why I found that funny.

Accusing people of not being genuine about their music taste (i.e. "just listening to it to feel cool") is hella insecure.

I agree. It's just how the general idea of the hipster mentality goes. Like all of those hipster memes

https://img.buzzfeed.com/buzzfeed-st...7193142-29.jpg

I haven't ever met a person that actually seemed to fit that idea of hipsterdom.

Yet, you see this idea pop up all the time. The amount of times I've seen people accusing others of just liking something because it's cool/makes them seem clever is considerable. Possibly even on MB? Not that I can name examples. It just seems to me that the idea of the hipster mentality is alive and well, even if it's hard to find an actual hipster of this sort.

Paedantic Basterd 09-14-2018 03:04 PM

That's what a stereotype is, though. An exaggerated, unrepresentative example of some group of people or another. I'm not surprised you can't find a prototypical hipster, but you can definitely find examples of behaviour we attribute to hipsters.

I think a lot of music that tires to be clever/smart is less so than it comes of as trying to be so. Knowwhati'msayin?

But it's all in the eye (ear) of the beholder.

I just personally think that music that goes for edge tends to come off as try hard and self conscious.

Sincerity needs a comeback. It's unfairly being equated with overblown tripe like Celine Dion/similar styles of delivery.

MicShazam 09-14-2018 03:42 PM

I might just be stupid or something, but your posts are often so clipped that I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at.

MicShazam 09-14-2018 03:56 PM

Nobody likes me but that's ok, because neither do I.

ManifestBlasphemy666 09-14-2018 03:57 PM

**** No

My tastes are awesome i'm sure people think the **** i post is garbage and unlistenable but i dont give a **** what they think.

WWWP 09-14-2018 04:55 PM

I feel like I outgrew judging other people's taste in music around the same time I stopped giving two ****s about people judging mine. Not caring is freedom.

That said mb sucks and is lame, yes.

Top 5 good taste posters

1) me
2) frown
3) bat
4) wolf
5) grindy

Frown and I are head to head and considerably ahead of the rest

He’s more discriminating so his stamp is more meaningful

I get too carried away too much but even as much as frown mines for **** I edge him out a little there

I wish bob posted more often, he'd be on my list for sure. Mine is similar to yours but I would bump WWWP for Mondo because I'm sexist.

OccultHawk 09-14-2018 06:42 PM

Did bob stretch beyond extreme punk noise stuff like the unsane?

Wolf likes a huge variety of stuff

Mondo misses sometimes

He had favourites but he's a real chameleon. He introduced me to I Am Sitting In a Room, eternal cred.

This is a black metal friendly site. We like BM, DM, grindcore, and all kinds of music that makes metal sound well-adjusted. You just don't talk about anything else and it's not an interesting take.

So I'm your number 3?

Yeah - you tear to the core and find the beauty

I also think you’re overly modest about what you get from avant garde and noise and ****

but most importantly you’re open to anything unlike say a jazz snob who snubs icp - you’re open to everything- that’s the only attitude I can really respect

also like lil yachty or whatever - you keep a childlike open curiosity about it

You don’t close it off with boring elitism

I may be an unabashed elitist but everything gets a fair shot with me

Like you
