…Baby One More Time or Smells Like Teen Spirit

Make the hardest choice of your life

OccultHawk 02-14-2019 05:27 PM

This is so personal I’ve allowed for secret ballot

Oriphiel 02-14-2019 05:29 PM

Which one sucks more?

Psy-Fi 02-14-2019 05:51 PM

It's a trick question.

The correct answer is Richard Thompson covering Britney Spears...

Richard Thompson - Oops!... I Did It Again

The Batlord 02-14-2019 06:17 PM

Gonna have to think on this one, seriously.

The Batlord 02-14-2019 06:58 PM

Yeah no after all is said and fun "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is in fact raw as **** and embodies raw as **** hardcore punk in a controllable way that had never occurred to anybody before and might never have occurred after. After all these years it's hard to summon up the energy to care like honestly I really ****ing should but I definitly should summon up the energy to care more than I could for Baby One More Time.

Smells Like Teen Spirit over Baby One More Time by a mile.

Plankton 02-14-2019 07:16 PM

It's funny how the target demographic lines can blur, especially over long periods of time after social barriers have been broken down.

OccultHawk 02-14-2019 07:19 PM

Baby One More Time is SO dirty though

Yeah but had you never heard Smells Like Teen Spirit then no matter when you heard it it would still have hit you in the ****ing face. I simply can't think of any other band coming about that would deaden the impact of Smells Like Teen Spirit. It is in fact a singular song, band, and effect.

You can talk all you want about the Pixies but no amount of the Pixies could prepare either you or the world at large for Smells like Teen Spirit.

Mindfulness 02-14-2019 07:28 PM

Nirvana is one of my favorite bands

SmokeAndMirrors 02-14-2019 07:32 PM

I liked Nirvana when I was a kid, I never liked Britney other than eye candy and what you'd expect a 13-year-old male that got into grunge before the age of 10 to get out of early Britney. As I got older I first figured out Britney's a hoe, and Kurt's a junkie. Badabing, badaboom, and done. I mean really, that's like asking me to choose between Jack and ****, to which I will defer to the immortal awesomeness of Bruce Campbell:

I know you’ll get **** for this but it’s absolutely correct.

There’s incredible power in One More Time too though

TBH as much as Nirvana's music was ace as **** I think Kurt Cobain's vocals were actually the true star of Nirvana. I can literally think of no vocalist before or since who could express what he expressed. Who could link hardcore, alternative, and something inexpressibly... perfect in a way I can't describe. Something that was both perfectly 90s and perfectly ageless. I mean you could put ten out of ten of the most well respected hardcore or alternative vocalists of all time in front of Nirvana and they wouldn't have sold a tenth of what they did.

OccultHawk 02-14-2019 08:32 PM

With anyone else you’d have Mudhoney

You listen to ****ing Smashing Pumpkins, you fucktwat. Billy Corgan's voice has its charm but that charm can not be divorced from the nasal cringe. Just like the music can not be divorced from being bland crap.

If Nirvana had never made it this would be a god tier track every 90s alt rock fan would rep as the second coming of Christ. And rightfully so.

Whoa I missed that dig at mindfulness

Dude, his taste in hip hop and old classic rock is what’s up

Regarding his hip hop posts - he tackles new **** / he puts himself out there with his opinions

You almost always let time sort out your music for you

Blank. 02-14-2019 09:20 PM

The question is which do you prefer horny teenage girls or burned out stoners?

grindy 02-14-2019 09:21 PM

Easiest choice of my life. Nirvana is ****, Baby One More Time is one of the best songs ever written.

Blank. 02-14-2019 09:22 PM

At karaoke, the girls shake to baby one more time. The weirdos do teen spirit.

grindy 02-14-2019 09:23 PM

Yeah, it's so weird and out there. True outsider music.

Easily Smells Like Deodorant. If the Spears song came out today I'd probably appreciate it more, but I have something of a nostalgic disdain for that track after being overexposed to it as a kid.

It is. TBH the choice isn't as clear for me in the light of sobriety.

grindy 02-15-2019 10:36 AM

As a kid I used to listen to lame **** like Beatles and Pink Floyd. Then eleven-year-old me heard Baby One More Time and it changed my life and that's how I got into real music.

Smells like teen spirit any day. I'll defend Nirvana anytime, there is certainly rawness about them. They might be slicker and way more accessible than really raw punk bands, but Kurt Cobain was raw somewhat in the way John Lennon was.
I appreciate how f*cked up dirty Britney's voice is though. Many people tend to whine about pop music getting more dirty and profane, but I've never heard anything like her voice since then.

Marie Monday 02-15-2019 12:06 PM

That's true

Marie Monday 02-15-2019 12:17 PM

That's amusing, I never listened to it that way but I suppose you could say that. John Lennon was naturally more funky than any grunge I've heard though

The only time that pumpkins were even kind of good was when they were ripping off Nirvana.

The Batlord 02-15-2019 05:39 PM

"Bullet with Butterfly Wings" is meh though.

Zhanteimi 02-15-2019 05:41 PM

I like Nirvana all right. Nevermind is great, In utero is all right. But at my age, I need VEVOs of schoolgirls dancing in the gymnasium.

I kinda understand why The Batlord feels that Smells Like Teen Spirit was a hit in the face ... you know after all those 80s Heavy Metal Power Ballads even a commercial jingle sounds "raw as ****"

Nirvana went hard and played sincere. And they didn’t just swing for the fences; they connected.

Is the reason you stick your nose in the air and start sniping at me when it turns out I like something you like too because you're scared that you'll catch dumb and end up fist pumping to "Home Sweet Home"? Cause you should totally do that tbh.
