TBH I like this comp better than any LP muchly because it's where I first heard Dead Kennedys but honestly I like the less fast approach of "Callifornia Uber Alles" and "Holiday in Cambodia" that allows Jello's performance to breath more, so Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables has never connected with me as much since those versions of the songs feel wrong. It also has "Police Truck" and the aforementioned "Night of the Living Rednecks" so that's an absolute no brainer for me to make it the definitive Dead Kennedys statement. I mean how can you listen to Fresh Fruit's version of "California Uber Alles" when there's a top 10 punk song version on another album?

Absolutely agreed. But it also has "I Fought the Law" so boom to the dick. One other thing I like about Give Me Convenience is that it's a comp without flow which reminds the listener that albums at the time were a two-decade-old arbitrary concept based around how much you could fit on a piece of wax rather than being an objectively valid artistic concept. If a band can put out one single song that resonates throughout history like The Kingsmen with "Louie Louie" then you are still a great band if you don't add the arbitrary necessity of making entire 30-40 minute collections of songs to being a great band, and punk most of all genres should ignore the need for full "albums" when they can just put out great music to be great. Give Me Convenience is just some great songs with some other great stuff thrown in which doesn't make it feel like a statement that makes every song feel the need to work with every other song in a way that is unnecessary to appreciate each song.

The Batlord 05-22-2019 06:41 PM

The point is that albums are an arbitrary medium and a comp can be at least as valid a medium for listening in one go and having a bunch of a band's best songs in one place along with some other oddities that are also bomb as **** even if they don't meld together in a seamless experience can be as definitive as an actual "album" and Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death is a perfect encapsulation of that. It's got a bunch of amazing **** and some other **** that doesn't fit in with the standard concept of an album that I love listening to as well that makes me very happy and the incongruity of it all feels perfectly valid considering just who the Dead Kennedys are.

I'd also like to point out that my point also applies to EP's and singles. Whatever makes you think a band is ****in' rawkin' yo is all that's needed. And many punk bands can release a bombass song but can't follow up with a full album or even a solid 7" with two other songs that can compare to that one anthem, but when they have you for that moment then nothing else matters. And a comp like Give Me Convenience that has a number of songs that "have you" ****ing rules and worrying about it not being a full album that "has you" for thirty minutes in an "album oriented rock" kinda way is kinda bull****.

OMG I'm happy to give this to you. Feel free to give it some time. I can throw another album at you if you wanna give this time to hit you or something. I don't need this to be a 1st impressions thread.

The Batlord 05-22-2019 07:25 PM

Oh and one thing I love about Radio Birdman is that they were a legit 1st wave punk band, as in they weren't influenced by 1st wave punk bands and then got together and released an album, they were legit a formative band where one of their main members saw the Stooges play live, moved to Australia, and formed a band based on wanting to build something off of that. They have a sound that doesn't sound like the Ramones taken to the next step, they just sound like they were riffing off the Stooges and were a part of the movement that just so happened to be forming in 1977 and so what they were doing sounds organic and innovative.

This is my ****ing thread, not a community thread. Piss off. If you have something to say about Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death or Radio Birdman then say something about that, otherwise go away.

Seriously, though, mod, this is not a thread for mocking elph (unless that is entailed by the conversation by virtue of elph engaging in convo about the album in question), this is a thread for either elph to talk about what I'm talking to him about or talking about what I'm specifically talking to him about. Otherwise I would like this thread left clear and I would like the mods to respect that.

But if the convo is about some album and it leads to mocking elph then that's just dandy so long as it's about mocking elph so far as it pertains to that convo. But only then.

The Batlord 05-22-2019 10:32 PM

Eyo Elph check out this little known EP by a band who I don't think wreckt better than their first two EPs even if they went to more renown after becoming boring afterward.

The Batlord 05-24-2019 05:22 PM

Sigh. You're killin' me.

The Batlord 05-24-2019 06:28 PM

The Damned's debut has fire but also isn't fire at times. Like it's the kind of album I'd expect from a ground zero punk band who were still desperately reinventing the wheel and not necessarily getting everything right because of it. I mean Machine Gun Etiquette is ****ing fire but it learned from what Damned Damned Damned didn't do right.

TBH I think Radio Birdman weren't reinventing the wheel as much as The Damned were and have a bit more of a traditional vibe (or at least they sound closer to surf rock than The Damned do to their influences) and so are more consistent on their debut simply because they're falling a bit more back on safe territory.

Comparatively speaking of course cause Radio Birdman were on another level from 99% of bands in 1977. I do feel you on them not having like those 10/10 killer songs though. It's 9 or 8/10 almost all the way through but nothing goes over that perfect song threshold. A more iconic vocalist could have changed that though. The dude has mad energy but is no Jello or Rotten or Joey Ramone. Their guitarist shreds though.

The Batlord 05-24-2019 06:40 PM

Yeah I don't understand why The Saints are the most known Australian punk band. "(I'm) Stranded" was def a 10/10 punk song but they had nothing else on Radio Birdman, and honestly "New Race" does make the cut for 10/10 and they just had more engaging songwriting in general.

The Batlord 05-24-2019 06:43 PM

Honestly I think part of the reason I associate Radio Birdman with more traditional songwriting might simply be because they're just pretty good at songwriting in a way that makes it sound like their songs should be more simplistic for no other reason than perception. They sound like a talented punk band at a time when punk bands shouldn't have sounded talented.

That's exactly what I'm saying. He's got so much energy and impact, but as a personality and performer he might as well be a metal singer. :pimp:

****ing lazyass. This is the best I can do.

The Batlord 05-25-2019 06:28 PM

Bro I been bumping that Birdman album for the last two days and its shot up a lot for me. Like **** what I said about it not having knockout songs. It's all knockout songs. It's just not quite as "big" about it like the Ramones or the Sex Pistols. It's slick and assured and filled to the brim with clever **** and riffs and whatnot that don't beat you over the head with their brilliance like a lot of punk does but there's textures for you to lick like a toad and then you're just rocking the **** out cause Radio Birdman are ****ing wild and always on the verge of being out of control. They kinda remind me of X tbh. They know their business and have control of it but they know how to sound unbridled despite that.

I mean tell me this isn't kick you in the face lit.

Decent cover but it still doesn't touch the original...

The barbarity of Radio Birdman means more to me than the 13th Floor Elevators ever did.
