So...you're agreeing with him that I am idiot...and then asking him to cool it?

My...hypocrisy runs deep in this thread.

So, Mr. Rule Man...let me get this straight - no tongue-in-cheek comments allowed, huh?

There is great need for a sarcasm font.

It must suck to not laugh at the absurd.

Can we get this back on topic now please.

We won't ask a third time.

scrolled back to the last page, and I can't even see where someone asked once...but maybe you can see something I can't.

My bad - I'm an idiot.

So, I apologize.

Now, back to the top 10.

And isn't "competent" synonymous with "run of the mill" "average" or "mediocre"?

J. Mascis is good, but I would say that there are emotive hardcore musicians who are equally skilled-or more than competent. The style of playing is pretty different, and I think there just don't tend to be guitar solos in emo. Also, a lot of it fits under the "punk" banner anyway.

This is a cool list because there are a lot of bands that I am familiar with, and respect, but none of which are my favorites. I probably should listen to more Orchid, Hated, and Still Life. I've heard Evergreen mentioned, but I only know the Louisville punk band--who are way cool themselves. The only Still Life song I really know is an acoustic jam from a comp on Tree records, so I know next to nothing (except that I think my friend said they palm-muted a lot).

I was huge into Indian Summer for a couple weeks and since then I've only liked them. There was a cool piece somebody wrote about "Aren't You, Angel" and compared it to "Angry Son" that I read just the other day, as well as something about "Waiting Room" (for the above poster). Maybe I'll look for a link.

I like the coexistence of screamo and Midwest emo here. I definitely feel like this forum is going south, but it looks like there are still some "real emo" holdouts here.

Here's a two-months-late followup to a previous post: Two cool "articles" about "Aren't You Angel" and "Waiting Room"

I just listened to Native Nod's album for the first time in two years. Such brilliant music. 'Tangled' is one of my favourite emo/screamo tracks, but all 9 tracks are masterpieces of tense and nervy hardcore music. Gonna break out some more old favourites in the next few days, starting with some Moss Icon and Indian Summer tomorrow.

Meh, people have differing opinions on what emo is these days. This is what I considered emo during my high school days. Rebut if you must. :-)

DoctorSoft 09-29-2010 10:34 PM

I love me some Braid and SDRE.

GreenMeany 09-30-2010 07:41 AM

They were amazing bands for sure. Nice name by the way. I saw Cursive live for the first time a few months ago with Alkaline Trio, and they were amazing. The Ugly Organ is also a solid album.

That Eucalyptus comp is killer. I put Current on my old list.

andrew. 02-17-2011 07:50 PM

Good call, very nice comp. I reckon Slingshot by Boilermaker gives Bastille a run for its money. The Julia and Shroomunion songs are great as well. You know your comp's good when Indian Summer have the 5th-best song on it.

Gila Bend - Keep Your Head Up
Eurich - Distant
Ethel Meserve - Calba's Last
Luck of Aleia - Happy Birthday
The Candyland Carcrash - Baffled on the Seventh Floor
Maya Shore - Restless Time
Hour of the Star - Rootbeer and Running Shoes
I Hate Myself - Caught in a Flood..
Kite Flying Society - Winter Solstice
Pennikurvers - Daredevil.

Dr.Seussicide 02-17-2011 08:05 PM

I'll keep you some company in this thread, my 10 ten favourites at the moment:

Saddest Landscape - Imperfect But Ours
Pianos Become The Teeth - Filial
Agesixteen - Dear Judas
Suis La Lune - Utter Silence is Fragile
Raein - Tigersuit
June Paik - Aleska
iwouldsetmyselfonfireforyou - Twelve
Aussitot Mort - Percute
Loma Prieta - Last City
Saddest Landscape - Declaring War On Nostalgia

Charlemagne 02-17-2011 08:15 PM

^That is a very fine list right there, especially a fan of the iwouldsetmyselfonfireforyou, The Saddest Landscape and Suis La Lune tracks.

andrew. 02-17-2011 08:44 PM

Nice list, Age Sixteen's Empty Nest does it for me every time. Great band.

If anyone's looking for some new **** to listen to, I still have no idea what bands were well-known in the 90s or now, but a few releases that are probably more on the obscure side that I would recommend -

The Stella Brass - Figure Eights & Heart Shapes 7''
Gila Bend - Gila Bend 7''
The Candyland Carcrash - The Candyland Carcrash 7''
Swingset in June - Demo tape
Watership Down - Watership Down 7''
Baby Harp Seal - Baby Harp Seal 7'' (the 1994 one)

That's a good, short mix. You can get all those (and about 800 other albums) at www.mediafire.com/emoisdead. That's not my account but it is something everyone that likes this kind of music needs to know about. The sister account screamoisdead is killer too.

BobLobLaw 03-19-2011 11:49 AM

Now it's on seven...

Go Radio's "Goodnight Moon"
Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle"
I Am Ghost's "Our Friend Lazarus Sleeps"
Taking Back Sunday's "What's It Feel Like To Be A Ghost"
Cap'n Jazz's "Olerud"
Scary Kids Scaring Kid's "Watch Me Bleed"
Panic! At The Disco's "Time to Dance"

Haha. I am getting such a kick out of this! I was actually the singer of Eldritch Anisette. And for years I only had a 7 inch that I would break out and every now and then to relive the memories.

Tonight I was sitting around with my BFF and decided to google "Eldritch Anisette." Never really thought to do it before. Why would I? This stuff if from 1997 or somesuch!

But andrew, I'm glad we made your top ten. When we existed we never really made it anywhere past Delaware, so it's nice to know we reached more fans via the internet.

Obi 05-28-2011 11:06 AM

1 per artist:

American Football - Never Meant
hopesfall - A Man Exits
Brand New - Millstone
Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) - How To Make Love Stay
Further Seems Forever - Monachetti
This Town Needs Guns - Lemur
Beloved - Failure on My Lips
Sucioperro - The Drop
Sunny Day Real Estate- Song About An Angel
Moving Mountains - 8105

There's stuff that crosses into post-hardcore/math rock/post-rock and even indie-pop there. Not really investigated Fugazi etc yet though.

Trauma 05-29-2011 07:57 PM

Fantastic list.
"Never Meant" is an awesome Indie/Emo song.

Obi 06-07-2011 12:40 PM

Oh, I'd say it's the pinnacle. :) One of those songs that completely changed how I listened to music for a while.
