How do you guys define emo?

I no u'll say it's "emotional punk" but there has to be a lil more to it? Cause Like anger and stuff is enotion so like all punk is emotionful? I Just Wanna Know If There Is Anything Else That Can Define Emo?

girls not grey 11-02-2004 05:08 PM

not the anger type of emotion. sadness, depression, apathy.

riseagainstrocks 11-02-2004 05:12 PM

Emo does stand for emotional but i tend to think of it as very introspective rock music that is usually on the softer side of things and has heartfelt lyrics.

David Frost 11-02-2004 05:30 PM

tight pants, black hair, band shirt, studded belt, wrist band, pop punk, not very good at guitar bass or drums, loves dashboard, constantly saddened by their girlfriend, livejournal.

why define anything? defining would only be limiting it, and putting limitations on music ruins it.

except with one amendment, they'd be constantly saddened by the fact that they don't have a girlfriend, cause lets face it, none of us would go out with the guy you just described, well except the "emo girls" but then they'd just get each other depressed and ebd up comiting suicide together, so they dont really count.

Thrice 11-02-2004 09:50 PM

hmmm...im sitting here reading my deadjournal from 9th grade, wearing an 'at the drive in shirt' and thinking about the girl i just broke up with after 8 months....im such a f.a.g my hair got so long it was in my face so i started brushing it to the side like an emop kid too...

active 11-03-2004 08:41 AM

Um. The music...uhhhhh like why isn't dashboard emo? If there lyrics are emotional etc! Woah...I simply wanted to ask what emo music was and I got some twats commenting as if it's some kind of trend...is this not a music chat room? I just want to know why some of you disagree when other people say other music is emo??? it's stupid to say it's just emotional punk and then say it's gott other aspects...like the beat etc...and where's the point between pop punk and emo then?

hopefornothing 11-03-2004 10:28 AM

first off emo does not have to be soft if it wasn’t for hardcore music we wouldn’t have “emo” now if you didn’t know that I don’t even know why you bothered posting on this thread
emo it self can be broke down it to several deferent categories emocore hardcore emo post-emo rock ect… for me to explain emo would take me pages so you can research that your self but to better explain emo I wouldn’t use the word emotional I would the word (passion)

active 11-03-2004 10:34 AM

oh god...You people don't even bloody know do you? It's all about being right etc...Lol Swing kids...Why don't you tell me how you define emo music?!!!!!!!! Emo is not a very high scoring word in Scrabble.

jibber 11-03-2004 05:56 PM

heh, ya sarcasm on the internet doesn't translate well, but come on, that stuff was all so over the top it was still obvious.

emokid 11-03-2004 07:40 PM

active, please do not post again, lest you realize that you are, indeed, a moron.

also, please don't ever ask for a definition of emo, especially via the internet. i've seen too many threads degenerate via mindless arguements.

sabrina_girl 11-04-2004 03:02 AM

hehe, i've was called an emo kid in the pub theother night, and afterthat discription i dont think i am one. most emo thing about me ist he fact that i listen to it, have short dark dark brown hair, and um wear black? do sex pistols t-shirts count as band t-shirts, or does ithave to be taking back sunday or a bnad like that? man i wish id read this mesage board before id done my presentation on Emo music! ah well whats done is done

spearmint 11-04-2004 08:35 AM

did you even bother to look at any other threads before you posted this? There's a load of threads either asking what emo is or describing it...there's no need to make another thread when you can look at old ones to find your answers

How true. Emo is not a genre. Emo is... a state of mind perhaps. So many bands have emo songs, emo albums, emo periods. The "emo band" does not exist.

bert 11-24-2004 03:53 AM

hahahaha ok lets see if this dont help i dont know what will some answer if they can... how meny emo kids does it take to skrew in a light bulb when it burns out :bonkhead:

Thrice 11-24-2004 04:45 AM

emo is NOT music. it is a philosophy, a lifestyle, a belief system, a religion, a set of thoughts and ideals that are based as the archetype for ones community, a culture...

[/sarcasm]

bert 11-24-2004 02:48 PM

wrong the emo kids wouldnt change the light bulb theyll just sit in the dark and cry about it and any thing else that come to mind

Oi_To_The_World 11-24-2004 05:34 PM

emo and punk are the only genres of music where i see people trying to define them. anyone wanna define rap for me ?(please dont)

David Frost 11-24-2004 06:02 PM

talentless clicks and whistles

franscar 11-24-2004 06:07 PM

What about girls in videos? Surely that has SOMETHING to do with it?

I'm so confused now.

tonedeff 11-24-2004 09:18 PM

emo isnt necessarily punk, i know ill be shunned for this. however, emo is a broad range of music, a very broad one actually. it can come from, and is more mainstream in the punk/rock genre. however it can be found in R&B and rap, sad as it is, music from usher, tupac and immortal technique have found a way to incorperate emotion into their music, thus making them emo.

a lot of people will say emo is a genre specific to punk/rock but i dont think it is, i think its a genre specific to artists who show their true emotions.

xx6jack6sally6xx 11-25-2004 03:25 PM

Its funny that the thread you all decided was dumb went on for 4 pages.

Thrice 11-25-2004 11:52 PM

everything is emo.

bert 11-26-2004 02:44 AM

agreed
