FakePlasticKid 10-14-2010 10:31 PM

brand new I know and like though I dunno if its exactly what I'm lookin for, I think its just the fact where I go to extremes (I like really really soft folk or absolutely brutal metal) I can't find anything in this genre that I like

another thing that may help is that I think my favorite lyrics from a band have come from The Barenaked Ladies, Nick Drake, The Smiths, and Mumford And Sons just to name a few more down to earth and literal (with the exception of morrissey there sorry their just what I'm listenin to the most right now)

I also liked Fightstar but their screaming wasn't that good, the lyrics were though so yea

thanks for the recommendations not particularly what I'm lookin for though

TheCunningStunt 10-14-2010 10:37 PM

Hmm, I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for.
It seems like you're looking for optimistic lyrics about love, with in a genre that's predominantly and loves lost, or loves that never took off, or how shitty things are going right now.
I only have a bit of Emo and Post-Hardcore, so maybe someone else might be able to help you. But I'm not sure the genre has lyrics that are quite optimistic, but I hope one band out there does and you find what you're looking for.

xcassiusx 10-15-2010 01:30 AM

"The Sin in Grey" - Majority Rule, on their album Interviews With David Frost.

Don't care if you're looking for that or not; it's ****ing good.

music_phantom13 10-16-2010 10:07 PM

Well if you like the heavier side of stuff, maybe look into heavier post-hardcore or emo stuff? Cap'n Jazz is Mike Kinsella too but it's heavier than American Football and has a more upbeat feel to it.

FakePlasticKid 10-17-2010 03:11 PM

ok Capn' Jazz is up my alley thank you

american football has also hit a little bit with me, but capn' jazz, thats more punk and I love me some punk

MagicMan 11-10-2010 08:07 PM

Agree on those two! I don't know the others, I'll check them later!
(btw I like your avatar! EF is great!)

I've been listening to Sunny Day Real Estate lately after quite a long time and I remembered that I just love that band. It's emo (I think though I still find it difficult to tag bands) and Diary and Rising Tide are both amazing albums!

motion city imo is the best of the poppy sounding "emo" bands out there.

skramz/jazz . . . just looking for good musicians

I'm looking for some new bands. Anybody out there know some bands that give off a skramz/math rock sound but are influenced by jazz? Or know of any avant-garde bands that just have some really great musicians. Thanks

Minute Men's album, Double Nickels on the Dime, is my first suggestion. You could try John Zorn for the the jazz type thing. It may not be what you're looking for but him and his work with Naked City is great in the realm of jazz. Laurie Anderson would also be great with this suggestion. As for bands with decent avant garde musicians... well, I'd have to suggest Arthur Russel's album, Another Thought. And then there's the all mighty Velvet Underground... their first album would is a must for anyone.

BobLobLaw 03-16-2011 06:26 PM

Okay, I'm looking for some Post-Hardcore stuff. I want something that stands out, with a memorable lead vocal. It can also have some screamo elements, I don't honestly care.

La Dispute
Touché Amoré

I enjoy both of these alot and so should you. Both have really good lead vocals. La Dispute has spoken word styled vocals and Touché Amoré has screamo style vocals.

Touche Amore - To the Beat of a Dead Horse

CanwllCorfe 04-19-2011 09:33 PM

I shall!

And to clarify (which I probably should have done before), I love the insane amount of emotion they sing with. It's so real.

rotts 04-22-2011 01:02 AM

you guys have any suggestions for any thing abrasive thats just barely in the confines of the skramz genre. i'm hoping to find some stuff that flirts between genres. read through a lot of the thread and love a lot of the stuff you have suggested. hopefully someone can help me out, thanks.

Kosmik-Warlok 04-27-2011 02:59 PM

To CanwllCorfe:

Caravels
La Dispute

Iridescence 06-22-2011 07:50 PM

I'm not even sure if Escape The Fate, Bring Me The Horizon, Asking Alexandria, etc. Is considered screamo anymore, considering the music I've heard from this thread. :o

BastardofYoung 06-22-2011 08:36 PM

It may owe to the original wave of screamo, but i find most of that stuff is far removed from it.

Emo and Screamo are both styles now that have gotten kinda bad names, people write off great bands they have not even heard cause they think Screamo is bands you mentioned, and Emo is stuff like Dashboard Confessional.

I used to be wanting to yell at people for that, now I just say, if they don't wanna listen to great bands because of an association with hot topic trends of today, they are not worth taking the time to educate. Their loss.
