just listen to the vocal style, it's incredibly similar, both in its abstract content, and even more so its delivery. both vocalists often change pitches several times within single words (i'm sure there's a choral term for this). the guitar lines are also similar, despite having different tones. both bands use higher register riffs and guitar lines (treble-y, if you will). percussions are very similar, despite Foals having on average higher BPM. overall, both Modest Mouse and Foals are very frenetic in sound and style, and their vocal delivery is very similar, leaping from mellow to distressed. however, both are also capable of sculpting dreamy, calmer tracks. check out "Heavy Water" by Foals. don't tell me it doesn't sound like Modest Mouse in their earlier days especially. also, at 3:16, the song legimitately could be a Modest Mouse song. hell, an accordion and trumpets even come in! Modest Mouse has incorporated accordions into several of their songs over the years.
