I don't think the whole Garage rock revival thing had nearly as much scope and impact as grunge did though, which might explain why there is so many post grunge bands still around...

England begs to differ.

loveissucide 11-02-2009 07:13 AM

Considering Is This It? remains the template for quite a lot of emerging Irish bands,I'd also have to agree with WolfAtTheDoor.Maybe this says more about musical stagnancy than anything else though.

WolfAtTheDoor 11-02-2009 01:33 PM

America certainly felt the repercussions of Grunge much longer than those of us living in the UK, thank God. We just got Strokes inspired ne'er-do-wells The Libertines, who then went on to inspire the next generation of unkempt ragamuffins fiddling about with untuned guitars. It wasn't much better than what you guys had to go through, but at least it wasn't Puddle of Mudd and Nickelback.

Ah now,I'm sure The Twang and Scouting For Girls give them a run for money in the pedestrian stakes.

Back on topic-The Strokes may have had a strongly negative influence on music, but it's not their fault. As regards the solo albums, are any of them worth getting?

Mojo 11-04-2009 08:46 AM

I think Julian Casablancas' album is worth getting. I'm listening to it a lot lately. It's quite New Wave/Synth-pop which i wasnt expecting but it's a good little pop record.

I'm guessing it's an attempt to acheive what they were straining for on First Impressions Of Earth?

Mojo 11-04-2009 05:51 PM

Im not too sure, i can see why you would think that though.

Maybe i need to revisit FEOE but i was thinking his solo album, even though he doesnt stray too much from the Strokes as to alienate the majority of his existing fanbase, was done in such a way that it could stand on its own rather than be a natural progression from that album.

I actually was unimpressed by it. I didn't like the repetitive techno background beats, and the similar tunes.

Love Strokes, though. Favourite band.

RobotInDisguise 12-25-2009 06:41 AM

I have heard about the Strokes but I've never really listened to them..
Was Spotifying it the other day and the first song I listened to by these guys I fell in love with.

Get the first album and the singles off the latter two and you're covered.

Sansa Stark 12-28-2009 03:27 PM

I really did not like FIOE, Room On Fire is more than singles though I'd say

Like Reptilia isn't all that great but Meet Me in the Bathroom is epic (and creepily about Courtney Love??)

Similar tunes? Do you mean similar to Strokes material? Because if you think his solo record is similar, from track to track, then i couldn't disagree more.

Spring Hall Convert 12-31-2009 08:08 PM

Is their a better Strokes track than Take it Or Leave It, I'm finding it harder and harder to find one.

They finished recording the 4th album The Strokes finish new album | News | NME.COM

RVCA 01-19-2011 05:14 PM

The new album is called "Angles" and includes songwriting from all members of the band, as opposed to predominantly Julian as it was in their first two releases.

Rolling Stone Mobile - News - Music: The Return of the Strokes: Inside the Fractious Sessions for Their Fourth Album

I'm afraid it might be a bit ****

So it's gonna be crap? lol

Also their best track is the one they did with Regina Spector.

Sansa Stark 01-19-2011 08:47 PM

i hope this isn't as **** as FIOE

scottsy 01-29-2011 09:14 AM

New York City Cops is a pretty good fun song... but didn't they pull it from the album after 9/11?? Did Is This It ever get re - released with that track?

I have that song on my copy of the album and i bought it in winter 2002. I've never heard anything about that happening.

scottsy 01-29-2011 02:17 PM

I heard it was pulled for a while at least... my copy has it too...

Violent & Funky 01-31-2011 02:40 AM

I think it is just named something different?

James 01-31-2011 09:28 AM

They renamed it for American copies. It was renamed "When It Started".

Telephasic 01-31-2011 09:46 AM

When It Started is a completely different song, so it was replaced, not renamed.

Badlittlekitten 01-31-2011 10:41 AM

Yeah the record company took it off the American version as well as chickening out with the Smell The Glove-esq artwork. Ridiculous really, and the fact that the Strokes politely complied speaks volumes of how rebellion's in the rock n' roll grave.

LG_Andrew 02-01-2011 07:43 PM

Who here is excited for the new Strokes album? I thought First Impressions was a major step back so hopefully this represents a return to form.

The removal of "New York City Cops" happened right after September 11, 2011 when a ton of New York City cops died so maybe the band, being New Yorkers themselves, felt in that moment that being a bit respectful of that trumped teenage rebellion. Don't get me wrong, that's actually one of my favorite songs on the album so I'm glad I have the European release. I'm just saying maybe them leaving it off when they did might have somewhat of a valid reason behind it.

Sansa Stark 02-01-2011 08:48 PM

I think When It Started is a better song

scottsy 02-02-2011 10:22 AM

I am just glad someone backed me up on my statement that it was pulled...lol... as to the rebelliousness of removing it, I dunno, I think the band probably didn't wanna piss off a whole bunch of fans, and the record company probably felt it inappropriate, considering the line "NYC Cops, they ain't too smart" would have been a red rag to a bull at the time... you know, there's a fine line between rebellion and signing your band a death warrant...

ismileargyle 02-09-2011 01:17 PM

Their new song "Under the cover of darkness" is up to download on their official website until Friday.

Rentabusmic 02-09-2011 02:55 PM

Yea, radio told me the album was free to download for the next 48 hours! A bit misleading on the homepage too. Good track though - if a bit more of the same-ish.

keith! 02-09-2011 06:42 PM

new track is wicked fun, im definitely excited for the new album now.

official album cover, y'all

TheCunningStunt 02-11-2011 10:09 AM

The new single isn't as bad as I thought it'd be, though it's still pretty forgettable.

The new album art is pretty rubbish as well.

I'll still look forward to the album's release even though it'll probably be gash.

It looks like 80s post-punk cover art, to be honest...
