I met Roger Miller at Pitchfork last year and told him he was my hero... he did seem like a real nice and humble guy. It was mindblowing how much sense Vs. finally made after seeing it performed live... the dynamics between the musicians are brilliant.

Roger published a diary for Slate magazine when Mission of Burma reunited and started touring again a few years back. It's a fairly entertaining read and gives you a good idea of Roger's ideas about music, his radical political perspective and his approach to life in general. Here's a link to Roger Miller's diary

Roger has studied classical music composition at CalArts and his first instrument is really piano. I've heard him play Bartok and Satie pieces during his stints as a solo artist and during his short stint with the Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. There's still probably some his solo albums from the Eighties and Nineties floating around in cyberspace somewhere in either digital or cd form.

I've had Vs. forever and love it, but I've never gotten around to getting more from them... where to next?

I'd say the 2006 release the Oblitterati is the best post millenium album from MoB. It's their most ambitious album musically with stronger vocals and a denser layered instrumental sound. 2wice, the opening song on Oblitteratti is the finest song they've ever written both musically and lyrically.

A few people have commented that MoB sounds more commerical on the album but those folks must be on a steady diet of Captain Beefheart, John Cage, Pere Ubu and the Residents.

sorry to post after like 5 months since the last post but i absouletly love MoB

They got me into post-punk and i've liked it since.

i started with signals call and marches and then of course, Vs.

defitenly one of my top 5 bands. great melodies and technicality along with great songwriting (check out Red from Signals Call and Marches)

I like ONoffON, but Vs is one of my favourite albums of all time. I actually can't believe anyone wouldn't regard Vs as their best! Quite interesting.

As stated before, I really hope I get an opportunity to seem MoB live at some point.

I'm with you, I think Vs. is much better than any of their post 2000 albums, but I do also really enjoy the Signals, Calls, and Marches EP. Of course it is a bit cleaner I suppose than their later work and I'm a big fan of the more distorted less polished stuff, but it's certainly not something to be overlooked.

As i said, i think Vs. is great, but i prefer the slightly more composed, textured and accessible sound of ONoffON.
