i agree with it being on the list, number 5 maybe not, but i agree with it being on there. that still does not mean i think they've had the biggest impact ever in british music, musically or socially.

Well I thought they were bland, uninventive pish when I first heard them about eight months ago as well. I couldn't give a stuff how many albums they sell, Radiohead sell a ton of albums, and they're bloody great, so the implied elitism won't really work out for this one.

Had 'Creep' been sent round the world in seconds by a clamouring group of students back in 1992 then Pablo Honey would no doubt have obliterated record sales, and probably obliterated the band as well. Generating huge sales is nothing new, nothing at all. Being plastered over newspapers is nothing new, nothing at all. The Arctic Monkeys have been as well marketed as Britney Spears was before 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' came out. Just aimed at a different target audience, what will no doubt become known as the 'I-Pod Generation' in Sociology classes up and down the land.

Found this.....

NME list of the best albums ever 1988

1 Smiths, The The Queen Is Dead 1986
2 Jesus and Mary Chain Psychocandy 1984
3 Joy Division Unknown Pleasures 1979
4 Smiths, The A Hatful Of Hollow 1984
5 Velvet Underground, The The Velvet Underground + Nico 1966

Now I love Psychocandy to bits , but 2nd best album of all time ?
Just goes to show that these lists are just a bunch of stock albums with a flavour of the month stuck in it.

The Queen is Dead, Unknown Pleasures, and the VU and Nico are way better than most of the stuff on the other best albums list.

Because they have only released one album for a start and it is hardly genre defining enough to merit them being in the top ten greatest british bands already. Maybe if after a few more albums they produce consistant and varied work you could think about putting them in the top 50 in my opinion.

Where were Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin btw?

I think the libertines are bad, and so is babyshambles (in my opinion). Pete Doherty = overated as hell and the damned have released way better albums then anything the pistols have done..not saying the damned deserve to be on there other then some bands but nevermind the bullocks wasn't that great of an album.
