The National

why do i always have to be the one to make threads about bands other people already listen to?? don't be so goddamn lazy people!! ( indielectro,by people i mean you *points accusatorily*)

*turns back from indie to thread*
i just downloaded alligator, it's pretty awsome, i suppose it's americana, it sounds like nick cave, does that make him americana too?
i wonder what the other albums sound like.

IndiElectronica 03-23-2006 01:41 PM

do you realize how much music I listen to? I can't start a topic on every good band I like... that's what my radio station is for!! I assure you, they are very high in rotation right now - so you will hear them every three hours or so (no band plays more than every 3 hours on my station).

Uh.. as for genre of this - it's pure Indie. I don't like the americana title they get as you wouldn't say that about Pixies or Pavement even though some of their songs are a bit americana/folky... not that any of these three sound much alike - I still say just pure indie...

I just got their first album and it's surprisingly ****... big let down :(

I'm on a lot of message boards mainly to keep my fingers on the pulse... I often find things at weird times as well. Last band I'm really getting into is Electrelane for instance and they aren't very new. I'm also going through about 20 new albums a week so even the very good ones are muted by the sheer amount of music I need to get through...

what do you mean *must install soon*? It works with any music player!! You are running out of excuses my friend!

Re National - Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers - is the one I just got... didn't realize there was more than one early album. I'll check out the other ASAP and let ya know..

For some reason I thought was about National the electronica band but, The National is wonderful. S/T is my favorite album and, IndiElectronica, your radio station is damn good.

Matt Berninger is most likely the second coming of Christ. My favorite band right now.

twinkeefactory 05-21-2008 10:01 PM

Just listened to that album today actually. I got it when it first came out (was that already over a year ago?) and have missed them TWICE in the area. They are playing this weekend at a festival that costs too much for me to go to, and i'm sooo bummed out. I would kill to see them live.

Yes! I have Boxer rated 5 stars on RYM. I love how the lyrics are so akward...The line about the lemonade in Fake Empire.

Is that that ATP festival? God literally all my favorite artists are there: Jens Lekman, Okkervil River, Dinosaur Jr., Explosions in the Sky, Silver Jews, Sunset Rubdown, etc. Goddamn the ocean.

That sounds epic but I was talking about Sasquatch Music festival in Washington. Sasquatch Music Festival

I was going to go, then didn't get tix in time, and now they're selling for over $300. I'm so bummed.

ProggyMan 05-21-2008 10:10 PM

Damn, allwe get is good headlinging acts, the biggest names, nothing small. There's occasionally something good in San Jose, but I never make it.

Ohh I heard about that too late. I was bitching to my friend about how boring Bumbershoot had become lately and how there was nothing worth seeing and he then told me about that one but I couldn't afford the tickets. I'm going to What the Heck Fest instead though, which is over in Anacortes which looks like it will be fun. Mount Eerie, Kimya Dawson, Calvin Johnson are really the only semi-notable names though.

I think I'm spoiled. Seattle is the place to be for live music. Hands down.

EDIT: Ok, LA and NY have their advantages.

Holy moly! Don't tell me we're in the same area??!!
EDIT: I have tix to Bumbershoot this year already. The line-up keeps getting better, and I haven't been for three years or so.

ProggyMan 05-21-2008 10:15 PM

We have good folk and Bluegrass stuff, huge festivals in Golden Gate Park, but besides that there's not much.

Are you going to this? High Sierra Music Festival > High Sierra Music

Might be pretty rad.

ProggyMan 05-21-2008 10:23 PM

I know some peeps up there, including my oldest brother and his family. It's not so bad. :)

sleepy jack 05-21-2008 10:45 PM

It really is =[ with gas so high I can't really drive down to Seattle regularly and the only bands we get are your typical WWU championed indie stuff. Now granted I happen to like the bands they drag through but its not enough!

ProggyMan 05-21-2008 10:46 PM

Squalor Victoria is good to.

twinkeefactory 05-21-2008 10:49 PM

I like Racing like a Pro

ProggyMan 05-21-2008 10:51 PM

Mmm me too, and don't forget Fake Empire. Anyone know if they're touring anytime soon?

sleepy jack 05-21-2008 10:51 PM

Yeah they are.

Alligator is better than Boxer if only for Looking for Astronauts and All the Wine.

ProggyMan 05-21-2008 10:53 PM

Maybe, but Boxer I haven't overplayed yet and it's more consistent. Aliigators is verrrry good though.

twinkeefactory 05-21-2008 10:54 PM

You can check out their website The National >> News for tour dates.

I like Alligator 10 times more than Boxer because it's filled with actual individual songs, songs that might even be single material, like Lit up, Friend of mine, All the wine, Mr November etc. I've listened to Boxer half a dosen times and only one song really stuck out, Fake empire. Everything else is just him droning in that monotone baritone of his and some neat drumming.

Oh btw, The Virginia Ep is out. :\

sleepy jack 05-22-2008 04:05 AM

I got the EP but haven't gotten around to listening yet.

The songs are more subtle, and they certainly don't sound the same. True, there's not much single material, but why is that a bad thing?

adidasss 05-22-2008 11:28 AM

It becomes monotonous after a while and my attention span is that of a goldfish. Alligator was a much more diverse album and managed to keep my attention even through some weaker songs.
