clark gable is good too.

wesleyboyd 06-05-2007 02:25 PM

I find it very hard to choose a favorite, I could listen to them forever, against all odds is pretty amazing, and the district sleeps alone tonight is pretty epic

No way! Postal Service is far more creative musically, at least that is my opinion. I have always found DCFC to be lacking musically.

napoleon.in.rags 06-08-2007 05:34 PM

The Postal Service is fantastic.

They're coming out with a new album at the end of the year, too! =D

sleepy jack 06-08-2007 05:42 PM

Yeah I heard about that, but its not the end of the year they're aiming to start working on it than but it depends on death cabs tour/recording schedule, so it could be a long time before it comes out. I really really hope Jenny does more on it, but depending on Rilo Kileys tour schedule to promote the new album she may not be on it at all, that'll suck.

Really??!! I didn't think they were ever going to make a new album, but if they are, well, YES!!!! That's awesome!!! Maybe then everyone will throw away their Owl City crap out of sheer recognition that the Postal Service were the original stuff! hehehehehe...

Flume 07-17-2010 03:44 PM

Woah.. Really happy to hear that TPS is making a new album, been waiting to hear that since Give Up, which probably is on the top 10 of best albums ever made.

scottsy 07-17-2010 03:46 PM

I still listen to Give Up vigorously, and its what? Five years old now? That's a sign of a great album, enduring relevance, listenability and enjoyment, all of which Give Up has in spades...

Flume 07-17-2010 03:48 PM

If I remember correctly it came out 2004. I'm guessing it's probably the album that I have l listened to most times since then (probably ever).

scottsy 07-17-2010 04:00 PM

Now I am more than likely to pull it out for re - listen tonight...hehe...

Heheh... That's what talking about the album will do to you ;)

scottsy 07-17-2010 04:07 PM

exactly!

Where did you hear that? From everything I've read, Ben has stated that TPS is just a side project and that a follow-up may never be released.

Quote:

In a December 2008 interview with Rolling Stone, Gibbard laughed off suggestions The Postal Service's long overdue follow-up to their 2003 hit Give Up is an indie version of Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy. Gibbard said that both he and Tamborello do not see it as a priority in light of their main projects, Death Cab for Cutie and Dntel. He said, "The anticipation of the second record has been a far bigger deal for everybody except the two of us... I don't know about it being the indie-rock Chinese Democracy, but now that Chinese Democracy has come out, I guess it just becomes the second Postal Service record that will never come out. There never really was a plan to do a second album. We work from time to time together but we have other things that take up all of our time.
And with DCFC releasing a new album sometime in 2011, I just don't see a TPS hitting the record stores anytime soon. Having said that, I'm pulling for it!

It was released in 2003 actually.

Yes, I've also seen that statement from Ben, which is why I was so suprised as I heard it. I have no idea if it's true cause rumours have been going around forever. If you look back someone stated earlier in the thread (a page or so ago) that they would start working on something at the end of the year, I don't know if there is an official statement or anything... I hope there is.

scottsy 07-20-2010 09:40 AM

Awwww, well I hope it's not just a rumour... but, however, the thought of a new Death Cab album is also equally appealing... :)

Stone Birds 07-20-2010 11:50 AM

i don't think the postal service will release a new album this year, jimmy's really busy with his new instrumental album "After Parties"

scottsy 07-20-2010 12:36 PM

Awwwww, darnit, had my hopes up for a while there, nevermind...

sidewinder 07-20-2010 03:15 PM

If they did put out a new one everyone (youguns) would think they're ripping off Owl City so they're better off not bothering. Their style got copped...too late now.

actually you'd be surprised how many "younguns" have actually heard "Such Great Heights" without knowing who its by

sidewinder 07-21-2010 03:09 PM

Actually I wouldn't be surprised at all, that just supports what I was saying.

IndiElectronica 07-22-2010 05:42 AM

Tamborello has had a lot of releases since i've checked... just getting them now but for sure check them out if a PS fan :)

To be fair, the guy from Owl City cited TPS as a large influence.

scottsy 07-22-2010 01:04 PM

If you consider in fluencing completely ripping off a sound, then he has a point...

**** that! All the young people can keep believing that. Anyone who knows anything about music would be able to state otherwise.

scottsy 07-23-2010 09:54 PM

Oh my god! Have you heard that Postal Service band or whatever they're called! TOTAL rip off of Owl City! How can they possibly get away with such a blatant copy!

Laurent Quinn Proper 07-24-2010 12:37 PM

You know, I actually wouldn't mind hearing that simply because I wouldn't want to have anything in common with such a daft person.

Freebase Dali 07-24-2010 11:20 PM

I have Give Up. I like 3 songs on it.
Any suggestions for a better album by TPS, I'm all ears.

Flume 07-25-2010 01:29 PM

Give Up is the one and only.

nylonsmile 07-29-2010 10:46 PM

See, personally, the thing with TPS is that I love a number of individual songs, but really there are chunks of their stuff I don't like. So I don't really feel any kind of attachment to them. I guess I'm just middle ground.

scottsy 07-29-2010 11:27 PM

I love the whole Give Up album, I gotta say... from start to finish, it's strong, interesting, compelling and just a damn tight pop album with very few glitches. I love it.

Seltzer 07-30-2010 01:39 AM

Give Up is a bit inconsistent IMO. Such Great Heights is fantastic and most of the first half is pretty good, but it seems to taper off in the second half. Maybe I just need to listen to it a few more times?

scottsy 07-30-2010 12:23 PM

I dunno, I LOVE the closing track, especially with it's instrumental buildup before launching into the vocals. Great track.

Exeggcute :3 08-04-2010 11:27 AM

I love Give Up too, each of the songs grows on you in time. I did something similar with another album by the Qemists, a few songs hit me at first, then a couple more, then the rest of the album. Give Up is very much like that.

That said, Ocean Eyes is very good and anyone who likes TPS should give it a proper listen, give it a chance. If you like that kind of music, then you shouldn't complain that there's more of it...

somedays 08-08-2010 11:08 PM

I love this band! I was introduced to them by the DEBS soundtrack. lolz

scottsy 08-12-2010 12:54 PM

Owl City is almost like those chinese knockoff cars and cellphones, they are that similar...

Demasco 09-11-2010 02:14 PM

Ever since I saw that 1/10 review score for "Fireflies", I feel like I need to play devil's advocate and defend Owl City. Sure, his voice is very similar to Ben Gibbard's, but if you take the two albums side by side, they're actually pretty different. Postal Service focuses more on simple, minimalistic beats and gradual build-ups, whereas Owl City is much more pop oriented and the album feels more calculated and produced.
I don't like or hate Owl City, I just feel the guy gets too much hate. That is all.

squonk 09-13-2010 07:03 PM

Pretty average I'd say in the scheme of things, the district is certainly sleeping alone tonight...
