I have and I think 'Happiness In Magazines' is a very good album. I am glad that you strongly disagree with me as I hate to follow a crowd ;)

I always thought it strange to compare the two bands. They are both totally different other than being labeled 'Britpop' the sound and image is completely different.

Although I like both bands, I think what sets Blur apart is that more members contributed, Graham is an underrated guitarist and Damon I think is classically trained on piano, at least in part.

Oasis is just Noel plus Lennon and McCartney.

I have that one too, it's really good. My fav GC song

Reminds me of Bob Dylan

But anyways perhaps it is you that is following the crowd. ;)

jackhammer 09-21-2008 05:53 PM

You cannot help but compare the bands especially around '95 with the battle for No.1. Musically they are not close but the time and place inextricably links these bands.

How can choosing 'Bring It On Down' be following the crowd. I rarely hear the track being mentioned and 'The Great Escape' gets dismissed for the abysmal 'Country House'. so choosing my fave Blur track from there won't be all that popular.

sweet_nothing 09-21-2008 06:05 PM

Bring it on down is one of my fav's. But there are plenty of other catchy ones on The Great Escape.

Why does everyone hate on The Great Escape?
although their most radio oriented and pop sounding record, i find it fantastic.

sweet_nothing 09-21-2008 07:56 PM

Their best pop album, sorta a kiss off to britpop before diving into lo-fi.

'kiss of the morning' was great, thought the follow-up was just NME bait. i'd quite like to check out some of his earlier solo stuff, with album titles like 'crow sit on blood tree' it kind of brings to mind john frusciante's tormented ****. but, you know, good.
don't think we're ever gonna see another decent record from the Blur again, honestly. Damon'll probably squeeze out a few surprises but... whatever. we'll always have fookin oasiiiis!

My 2 Cents...

I just wanted to talk about how I feel about each group and/or which band is better. I just want to say before I go on my analysis that I think that Oasis and Blur's music appeals to me, but in different ways. Besides the fact that they're categorized as "Britpop" and that they both derive from The U.K., I don't see much in common musically or personally-wise.

We've all heard about it: The "battle" between Oasis and Blur. Believe it or not, it all started by their record labels. Back when Oasis was coming out w/ this 2nd CD [(What's The Story) Morning Glory ?] and Blur their 4th (Great Escape). Oasis' single "Roll with It" and Blur's single "Country House" were supposed to come out one week after the other, but the people over @ their labels found out about each other's release date and decided to release it the same day. When this happened, it not only started a "war" between Blur and Oasis, but increased it to include Northern England (working class) vs. Southern England (middle/upper class) aka Labour Party vs. Tory party. Apparently from what I read in NME, it got to the point that they held a live interview @ The BBC that night (August 15, 1995) w/ Damon Albarn who thought it was being blown out of proportion. It obviously escalated from then w/ quoting battles between them. Noel and Damon actually started out complimenting each other withholding enough to throw in how each respective bands' popularity is just a bit better than the other. By the time Oasis came out w/ their 3rd CD "Be Here Now," Liam was quoted as saying "I hope they all catch AIDS and die!"

Needless to say, I'm in agreement w/ Melody Maker when they stated that Blur and Oasis are like a 90's version of The Stones and The Beatles. They're so different, yet similar. Who do I like better? It's hard to imagine since I own every CD from both bands, but I suppose it would depend on my mood. When I'm in a bad mood, I'm more inclined to listen to Oasis; in a good mood to Blur. I like each band for different reasons, ya know? One thing I can do is tell you guys that when you're listening to tunes like There's No Other Way, Parklife, or Song 2, you're inclined to stand up, dance and swing your hands in the air. When you're listening to Live Forever, Champagne Supernova, or Stand By Me you feel like laying on your couch and wanting to hug your significant other.

Can someone tell what Blur were thinking more so Damon during the filming of the On Your Own music vid? I mean did he really think he was being cool or was he just joking around?

Is that the one where the drummer is playing a drum machine thingy in a manhole?
No idea.

kyleargyle 09-24-2008 08:18 AM

Anyone else heard Oasis's new album? It's surprisingly...brilliant.

Yes and Damon is wearing that white LL Cool J hat and has gold rings and the camera is shoot from a downward angle like every rap video and it ends with this guy break dancing.

RockGuitar101 09-25-2008 04:01 PM

I think they were stoned too much to be great. Or they were playing drunk.
Just sounds that way to me.

I love that video. It's so silly.

Oasis is one of my all time favourite bands. I liked Blur more when I was younger but after I discovered Oasis there was no way back.

Astronomer 11-11-2008 07:48 PM

Blur. I don't like Oasis.

Sorry Im not really clued up on those little signs
Your meaning?

sweet_nothing 11-15-2008 05:38 AM

I'm shocked, both bands are very enjoyable and Blur is the best English band of the 90's.

But anyway, is Damon's Journey to the West opera any good?

FireInCairo 11-15-2008 05:47 AM

I havent heard it yet...but I shall be listening out for it.

Hmmm.... I disagree (although I can't and won't pick my favourite)

Oasis = third rate beatles (and I don't think that much of the beatles)
Blur = third rate Kinks (more enjoyable to me as the kinks are brilliant)

incredibly.
feels like a gorillaz release if anything.
very fun and well put together.

confessions of a pig is one of my favorite things Albarn has done.

PrivateJoker 11-25-2008 12:02 PM

i like both bands. but blur sounds better.

Noel Gallagher: 'We're In The Same League As The Rolling Stones' | News @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com
Noel is so funny, but Do Blur have their own thread on this site? I cant find it =\

daz 11-30-2008 09:29 AM

I like em both but I prefer Blur, like the hype and the fun element in their songs

The Monkey 11-30-2008 09:44 AM

Looks like both Blur and The Kinks will reunite next year. 2009 will be sweet!

kyleargyle 12-04-2008 12:11 PM

is the blur reunion gonna come with an album as well? or just a tour? either way, i know who'll be headlining glastonbury that year...as well as several other festivals.

AshuhLee 12-06-2008 11:12 PM

I like Oasis.

Not love.
Just like.

I do love Britpop though. It's pretty amazing.

And I agree with a post on like the first page. I'm sorry too lazy to quote.
It was about Oasis being drunk jackasses to each other.
The two brothers, Liam and Noel.
Liam thought he was the ****, and Noel wanted to steer the band in a different direction.

I've never really listened to blur but I do like a few things by them. =]
