Ok I'm hooked, just listened to Hissing Fauna twice, what next?

Skeletal lamping is the most similar to Hissing fauna. The sunlandic twins is much more straightforwardly poppy. Satanic panic is basically when they started to be good and added the synths and whatnot. I've not gone much further back than that, but what I heard I didn't particularly care for.

Their pre-Satanic stuff is just as catchy and terrific, just replaces synth with acoustic guitars and lots of organic instruments. Heres a big list of awesome pre-Satanic of Montreal songs:

Barnes' freak funk is basically the greatest idea of all time. I'll go out on a limb here and say that there is literally nothing like it, nothing, in all of pop.

Suffer For Fashion is a pop masterpiece. as is most of Hissing Fauna.

after listening to the SL countless times through (and enjoying it too), i still believe if is inferior to the previous 2 recordings. i agree that it shares alot in common with HFAYTD, but it is to incohesive. its not like i blame him though, he had alot better material to write about previously and it came out more natural. i think we can safely say kevin barnes has fashioned a brilliant blend of funky electro pop , but needs to be more patient in connecting the dots. i think he did a lot of the writing for this album on tour... which may explain its lack of structure. much love for the funky bastard, lets hope he has more HFAYTD/SP left in him.

I got hissing fauna because this is my sisters favorite band. I wasnt sure what to expect, but i dig them. Got to see em live in austin the same weekend as explosions in the sky and the sword before coming to iraq. I loved the live show, and a girl named rachel in the audience with a robot tshirt...... but anyway, awesome album.
