Default The Veils

Searched for a thread but couldn't find one... feel free to merge if there is already one which I overlooked.

Anyway, The Veils. Anyone else into them? I'm seeing them live tomorrow night and I don't really know what to expect, I only really own one of their studio albums, Nux Vomica.

They're an alternative/indie band based in London, fronted by New Zealand singer/songwriter Finn Andrews.

The 3rd vid is distorted to buggery but I do like that 2nd track a lot. A little cliched for sure but I loved the build up. Is there an album out?

Yeah it's hard to find good footage of them, sorry! They have a few albums out, I'll get you some links if you like?

Anyway, I was a little unsure about them at first but after seeing them live the other night I am won. They were amazing, very intense and seeing them live was much more interesting than listening to their recorded stuff. Finn Andrews, lead singer, was a very charismatic and engaging performer... in one of their very emotional songs he cried on stage, and I know that sounds lame but it was quite a moment. I also had the pleasure of meeting him and the bassist Sophie Burn who were wonderful, interesting people.

I also found out on the night that all members are in fact from New Zealand. They are based in London in the hopes for more recognition, which I think they are hopefully starting to receive! Unfortunately though Australian and New Zealand bands are commonly overlooked... as demonstrated by the popularity of my threads, ha!

I think myself and Bulldog are the only ones apart from the natives who promote music from down under. Some of the best music I have heard recently is from there.

So I have had time to digest the album and it's a damn frustrating one. Some of it just the same old guitar pop that reminds me of Coldplay etc which sort of goes nowhere but then there are tracks such as Jesus For The Jugular and Pan that really stand out and seem to carry real emotion with balls. Definitely worth listening for those two tracks alone though.

Yeah the album is definitely a hit or miss... there are some tracks that are a bit lackluster in my opinion but I think these are outweighed by a number of tracks that are really emotional. I love 'Not Yet.' I think they have a very raw quality about them... seeing them live maybe solidified this for me.

Nux Vomica probably wasn't the best album to start with either, The Runaway Found is a very different and very good album from them (Vicious Traditions is a great song) but I'd have to search for a link, and their newest album Sun Gangs I actually haven't listened to.

It's funny how you say you are reminded of the 'same old guitar pop' that brings to mind bands like Coldplay, because I've never thought of The Veils as that at all. I have always seen them as quite raw and a little bit gritty.
