I was quoting all the 'oh so indie we were fans when they couldn`t sell out a shed' fans that seem to plague this band

^yeah that gets very old, very fast. I wish people would quit bitching that a band "sold out" and not read into it more than they have to. Bands change their sound and their direction, and sometimes it results in more radioplay, and more people hearing about the band. It doesnt mean they sold out, it just means they decided to change the direction of their music, and their decision paid off. It's a business, bands are in it to make a living.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-14-2005 05:41 PM

Why not just say they made a crap album

I`ve been saying that for years about them & it`s never done me any harm.

jibber 02-15-2005 06:04 PM

meh, they've made some great albums, and I love their old stuff. But that doesn't stop me from saying that I think their newer stuff is nothing special. I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say it's crap, but I definitely wouldn't call it good.

pretty much how I feel, 'cept all their CDs have a lot of filler and sleeping pill qualities.

PopIsDead 03-21-2005 11:41 PM

I only like a few songs from their newest album, but I like almost every song from their older stuff though. I don't think they really sold out, but they certainly changed their style.

yeah that's true, I went through their CDs last night, and it seems every CD of theirs has a few amazing songs, a few songs that I completely forget about seconds after I hear them, and a few that I can't stand listening to more than the first 5 seconds. But I still love them, because I think when they do get a good song, they really get it right. Have to agree with Urban that there are other bands who have made very similar music to modest mouse, but for me they have something that keeps me coming back to the good songs they have made. Plus, dramamine, out of gas, polar opposites, and heart cooks brain are the most perfect songs for skiing pow that I've ever found.

Ensemble 03-25-2005 09:51 PM

I got one of their old CDs, it wasn't that great.

allrocker11791 03-27-2005 08:30 PM

their awesome

Trauma 03-27-2005 09:25 PM

Not band, just another new major record label band in constant rotation on MTV...hey they wanted to get rich though.

MusicMonkey 04-27-2005 02:01 PM

Modest Mouse is a good band I would have to say I like thier older stuff better though but still a good band.

chris89 06-26-2005 09:51 AM

All this talk about modest mouse selling out is retarded i have every single one of their cds and i do have to say that good news for people who love to hear bad news was not there greatest album but that doesnt mean they have sold out. The only reason float on made it onto MTV was that people these days like to hear bad music not to say float on is a bad song but it is not one of there best. I think all of you people need to stop worrying about modest mouse selling out, and about so called "genaric" people listening to them and lisen to the modest mouse that you know and that you have always liked. If you were a band you would also want to make it "big" wouldnt you, just because there music is becoming more popular doesnt mean that it is going to be worse. Take a look and band such as Zeppelin, ACDC, Bob Dylan, they never "sold out" when they made it big, we need to all trust isac that he will continue to keep modest mouse real.

shandapanda 06-26-2005 02:43 PM

well then, a lot of my friends have recommended them to me, i downloaded a few songs for a listen. haven't gotten round to it even though i don't think the song i'm listening to now is all great......

DidierD 06-27-2005 07:17 AM

i saw them at leeds fest the other year, they were particularly stunning live

Imonlydancing 06-27-2005 11:21 AM

Please Show me! They sold out because they used to bitch about everyone else that sold out. They were always indie as hell...they were "the model indie band" then they went and signed with a big label...thats why they are sell outs...they traded in their pride for money.

I saw them in concert on the Unlimited Sunshine tour before they "sold out" and they sucked alot. Give me the sell out mouse anyday.

Zygomycota 07-25-2005 08:52 PM

My friend went to see them and *gasp* he talked with isaac.

DidierD 07-26-2005 10:56 AM

puddin 07-30-2005 02:24 AM

My favourite song of theirs would probably be either 3rd Planet or Styrofoam Boots.

Isaac Brock is god.

There isn't a song on any one of their albums that I couldn't personally relate to during my high school years.

About the selling out thing, I'm pretty sure that the only hypocrisy is coming from people who called them sell-outs. If there was a quote from Eric Judy from 1996 wherein he said "Modest Mouse doesn't believe in selling music for profit," then the story would be different, but I hate it when people rag a band for getting known. I didn't hear "Gravity Rides On Everything" (off of Moon And Antarctica) on the commercial until AFTER Good News came out.

It's true they wouldn't be nearly as popular in the mainstream without MTV playing "Float On" every 10 seconds last summer, but that isn't the band's fault. They made the music they wanted to, then MTV decided it'd be very hip of them to "break" M.M. through to the general public. There's nothing wrong with not wanting to be poor. Sure it's nice to play small clubs for 10 years, and have about 30 people know who you are, but it's even nicer to be able to live in comfort and still make music that doesn't suck. Also, it gives everyone who listened to Modest Mouse before Good News the right to say they did, and who doesn't enjoy doing that? ;)

And if you actually get your music in a TV commercial, you can get a chance to expose thousands of Top-40 zombies to some actual good music. If I still haven't convinced you that there's nothing wrong with bands leasing their music for commercial purposes, consider the fact that "New Slang" by The Shins has a line about "the dirt in your fries," and it was featured in a McDonald's commercial.

Takin' the man down from the inside...

iamthecosmos 07-31-2005 04:17 AM

Everybody needs to coooooooooooooooooooool down! Music is music. Listen to it. It's good. And as for Modest Mouse, they're even better then music itself. "The World At Large", "Blame It On The Tetons", "3rd Planet", "One Chance", "Bankrupt On Selling", "A Different City" and "Dramamine" are my favorite of their tunes.

mancmusic 08-01-2005 09:53 AM

i like 'paper thin walls', but i'm not mad about the rest of their stuff to be honest

IndiElectronica 08-05-2005 06:59 AM

Christ - I'm SO TIRED of indie elitism... if a band makes it to the charts or is on the wrong label then they 'suck' or are 'sellouts'. You really need to get a grip if that's the way you think as it DOESN'T MATTER! If the music is good, it's good!

Besides the fact that many small/insiginifact bands are being signed by major labels now right out of the gate.

Anyways - Modest Mouse are very good. I lived in Seattle and from ~90-2001 and for some reason I never got into them. Had plenty of friends that liked them but for some reason I never check them out. I wish I had of course now! First album I bought of theirs was Good News for People Who Love Bad News and it's fantastic. Have all their albums now, but still prefer Good News for People Who Love Bad News. Float On is one of the best singles of the last 5 years.

oneandonlymea 12-19-2005 04:10 PM

thers some bands where no matter what lable their with, theyre still rad. modest mouse is definetrly one of them. you cant get more original and awesome than then.

either/or 12-20-2005 02:07 AM

moudest mouse are all right...not great

Imonlydancing 12-21-2005 03:23 PM

I like modest mouse.

Expletive Deleted 12-21-2005 04:58 PM

Modest Mouse are one of the best bands around now. Anyone who disagrees needs to stop listening to "Float On" and start listening to Lonesome Crowded West or The Moon & Antarctica.

mosesandtherubberducky 12-21-2005 05:37 PM

They are good. The Float On video looks like a sheep hearder's acid trip.

mannequin Republic 12-30-2005 02:57 PM

You all need to learn that bands don't owe you ****. Making music is their JOB, if they'd rather make millions of dollars then be brokeasses their entire lives than more power too them, it doesn't change the fact that they made tons of good music. I can't stand it when people bitch about a band "selling out" you try being in their position and i GUARANTEE you would all take the money in a heartbeat. If their music goes to **** from here than so be it, they produced a lot more quality music than most bands ever will, and they deserve to reap the benifits of being amazing musicians.

Sabgoat 12-31-2005 11:31 AM

dramamine - modest mouse
thats a awesome song!!!!

Soundgardener 01-22-2006 11:52 AM

I just bought Sad Sappy Sucker and I must say that I love it. I have heard good reviews of this album from friends, and I think it lives up to those.

omgwtf 01-22-2006 12:16 PM

They're awful, I can't stand the vocals.

Me neither. Granted I've only heard a couple songs...

IndiElectronica 01-23-2006 05:28 AM

if you don't like 'float on' then I don't know what to say....

FfEeeEeeKk 01-23-2006 07:05 AM

I really like their sound. Its kind of devilish...well, in certain songs...like Satin in a Coffin....I just really like their sound...but you have to be in the mood. Their old stuff was so much better than Float On and stuff...like 3rd Planet.
