Wiki:

"Tune-Yards (often stylized as tUnE-yArDs) is the project of New England native Merrill Garbus. When performing live, Garbus creates drum loops on the spot, and layers these with ukulele, voice, and electric bass (played by Nate Brenner).

The first Tune-Yards album, Bird-Brains, was originally self-released by Garbus on recycled cassette tape. It was recorded using only a handheld voice recorder.

A second album, w h o k i l l, was released on April 19, 2011. A single from it, "Bizness", came out in February 2011. It was produced by Garbus and engineered by Eli Crews at New, Improved Studios in Oakland, California. Applying the live approach to her studio work for the first time, Garbus works with bass player Nate Brenner, who co-wrote some of the album's songs. Comparing the act to Sonic Youth, Frontier Psychiatrist said, "if BiRd-BrAiNs was Garbus’ EVOL, a record bursting with musical ideas that attempted to subvert the notion of song, w h o k i l l is her Sister, a record that embraces the traditional pop song as a vehicle to convey those ideas."

Definitely the freshest sounding record of 2011 for me. I couldn't believe this is actually a white chick, she sounds like a black dude. And the music is a fantastic amalgamation of Dirty Projectors, Tv on the radio, Vampire Weekend and Micachu and the shapes. So yeah, really good stuff.

The fantastic single Bizness:

Wow. I like that song a lot! I hear a very strong afro-pop influence in there which is pretty cool.

Ok, it's definitely the strongest album I've heard this year. It's gonna take something pretty spectacular to top this.

My country for song of the year:

Seriously, so many things going on with this song. I have no idea how these artists which seem to spring out of nowhere manage to produce (and I don't mean just make but actually produce) songs as immaculate as this. The fuck.

Any links perchance? This album is not the easiest thing to find. :)

Bird-Brains was just an alright album, but I can see myself liking this one. It will at least be fun to listen to. :)

Best thing I've heard this year. I'll check out the rest, cheers.

Nice to see you've moved on from your Coldplay obsession. ;)

"Gangsta" is a pretty interesting track... I like how she uses the distortion of her voice throughout the song to simulate sirens, and how (towards the end) she uses the percussion and saxophone to make it sound as if there were guns shooting.
