You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur Jr
What did you guys think?
|
I thought it was very good. It has a really unpolished punk/heavy metal quality that goes together really well.
My favourite songs were probably "Lung" and "In a Jar". |
Definitely the best Dinosaur Jr. album for me, it's just that little bit better than Bug and a clear progression from Dinosaur. The opener 'Furry Little Things' is the highlight of the album for me, I love the way it opens with screaming and J Mascis' wah-wah guitar, pretty damn good song too. So many other great songs on this album such as 'Sludgefeast' with it's heavy Black Sabbath-inspired riffs, 'In a Jar' and their blistering cover of The Cure's 'Just Like Heaven' (although it wasn't on the original album). Everyone always brings up the really ****ty production but too be honest I can't really imagine it any other way. I love recordings that don't sound quite right, it just seems to add extra character to the music.
For anyone getting into alternative rock this is definitely a must-have album. |
my favorite DJ album. I voted 'very good'.
|
Brilliant album! I strongly agree with one of the previous posts saying that this is a must have album for someone getting into indie rock. In a Jar, Little Fury Things, just some great rock and roll!
|
WHAT DO I THINK? Seriously this albums ****ing incredible. If you dont like this then no indie rock or Dino Jr will every do it for you. Kracked is one of my favorite songs of all time.
|
I voted very good, the only song I don't like too much is the opener. I think my favorite was Tarpit. It's pretty much just a really solid album.
This reminds me, I have their album Dinosaur downloaded and I should really get around to listening to that. |
I still need to listen to it. I've been meaning to check out Dinosaur Jr. for a while now, so this would probably be the best time to do so.
Pretty excited considering all the positive comments I've been hearing here. |
One of the best albums in the Dino Jr discography despite its crappy production.
|
I enjoy the "crappy production". It is lo-fi sounding for sure, and that is part of it's charm.
First album I heard by DJ though was "Bug", and I still llike it as well, this video is one of my faves, wish I would of caught then last time they were around these parts... next time for sure. |

One of my favourite live clips ever though is their performance of 'Freak Scene' on the 1991: The Year Punk Broke film. Also note the difference in crowd reaction between the two clips. |
Quite simply one of my favorite albums of all-time. It makes a statement, and it's such a cohesive piece. A truly unique bite of music...
|
The more I listen to this album the more I'm realizing that there's some really good tempo work on top of just being some good music. I'm really enjoying how I can listen to this album AS an album because it doesn't have any really weak tracks and each song is different enough to keep your interest, but at the same time it sounds like an album rather than a mix tape.
Can anyone recommend me other good albums from this band? I recently downloaded the discography and I'm wondering which is the best album to proceed with.... |
just go in order.

Loving Little Furry Things at the moment. This record was somewhat of a grower for me. The first few times it was kind of boring, then I started liking it a bit, and now I full on love it.

It is my second favorite-ist DJ album (after 'where you been') There really isn't a weak track on YLAOM and it is a total classic. |
One of my favorite albums evarrr, so yeah.

hardly a fan of "slacker rock"
voted "mediocre" |
man, Linkin Park has fried your brain.
|
I've never understood the slacker label. It's not like they sing about not cleaning their room or paying bills.
|
it's "slacker" because it sounds "lazy"
|
Hardly!
J's guitar shredding makes up for that enough, and Murph's masterful fills should at least contribute. Lou's not a bad bassist at all either and strives to bring a little experimentation to what J would have had as good old rock. |

^^it doesn't sound as if much effort was put into it
|
That's a draw, at least for me. It's like these guys are so cool that they don't even have to try and they can create music this explosive...

"Slacker" is how Mascis made virtuosic electric guitar playing "cool" enough to become prevalent in indie rock. Before Dinosaur Jr., punks preferred three-chord guitar and if you played a solo you were ostracized. With his "don't give a **** attitude" Mascis's guitar skill was embraced because it didn't seem like he was doing it for attention (when of course he obviously was)...

Why does it sound lazy? Because of the Lo-Fi production values? I dislike the 'slacker' label, it's stupid, whilst suggesting that little effort was put into the recording is perplexing. There's so much energy and aggression in those solos, power chords, rhythm sections and Mascis' vocals. It's a well constructed, affecting album, I cannot see the lack of effort anywhere.
|
There's energy in Mascis's voice? Point me to a song haha...
|
i couldn't hear anything but single takes, the construction sounds slapped together
which is fine if your name is Neil Young, but not J. Mascis |
This clearly isn't a conversation worth continuing on with.
|
Neil Young ain't no J Mascis...
|
I listened to this again yesterday (first time in about three years) and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Agree with the problematic "slacker" term. |

Off this album, Green Mind is spilling over with raw, punk attitude in Mascis' vocals. Just saying.
