We are Young

If you haven't heard this in some commercial somewhere you might not own a television. Was rated as song of the year by some outfit (2011).

Some Nights

They said this was Graceland/Power (Simon/West) mashup and I can hear that, but I still hear Queen and Kansas in here too.
I used to work in a place which had the radio on the whooe day and this song drove me nuts. Can't stand it sorry.

Of course, with most artists they've gotta get poppier as they progress, but I like Aim & Ignite specifically because of its emphasis on strings/a more classical sound. Also, the beat is less constant, which gave them more freedom to mess around/experiment a bit more, specifically in a song like Be Calm:

fun. - Be Calm [AUDIO] - YouTube

Some Nights is an awesome album, but the autotune in Stars kills that song for me, even though parts of it are so great. I'm really excited to see what they do next. I'm seeing them next month actually, I've heard they're great live!
This song is not too bad but I find him a bit hyperactive.

I think the Queen reference is due to his energy but I don't think you can like only one or the other.

At least listen to their first album before judging.

My hipster-b!tch came out when I heard "Some Nights" and I totally thought they sold-out, but I eventually learned to love it slightly below "Aim & Ignite" as I realized I could still hear them in the new record and they sounded amazing live when I saw them.

Their third album will make or break them for me (at least until their next album) so this time I hope they don't let their producer tell them to get rid of the "crazy extra stuff" or whatever Jeff Bhasker called it. If they'd just somehow merge the rawness of "Aim & Ignite" with the more epic feel of "Some Nights", it'd be killer.

ive not listened to them extensivly by any means

somethin about the lead singer really irks me. maybe just cause i thought it sounded sooo bad when he used autotune in that one song i heard. they have been over played sometimes but i dont hold that against bands

I've never understood the claims that Some Nights is more mainstream than their first album or that they've 'sold out' (which is a meaningless term in my mind). Their style is pretty much the exact same sugary indie-pop as it was in Aim and Ignite, just with the more electronic incorporation. I don't buy the use of auto-tune as evidence of anything, much less selling out. I think it's a tool that can be used creatively and effectively, or not, just like any other tool. Claims that autotune detracts from the 'soul' of a piece are ridiculous to me. "Stars" is the most poignant, expressive song they've released in my opinion, and it uses autotune extensively.

I know that this response would've been much more relevant a year ago, but I just discovered this thread.

I agree. I know I said I thought they had sold-out at first, but eventually I got over it and realized I can still totally hear them in their music. People are so biased towards electronic music. It's like musical racism. Stars is definitely up there in their songs and even though I've never been a big fan of auto-tune, the emotion of Stars made it work and I actually like the auto-tune.
