Yeah, I think they were a pretty essential starting point for me to be where I am now w/r/t my taste.

Oddly, I think they were a big part of why I listen to a lot of experimental music. Songs like Aluminum allow me to take noisier stuff seriously, and those Captain Beefheart covers gave me something in the genre to pursue (even if it didn't necessarily click upon first listen).

They also got me into punk, which somehow lead me to Hella and Melt Banana.

Damn good band, especially considering it's only a duo

Great band. I preferred The Raconteurs though.

The White Stripes are alright but ive always perceived that they don't have an original sound that defines them as an original band. ive always thought Jack emulates the sound of other bands and just adds a pinch of originality to it. I think he's a great guitarist and that Meg is a good minimalistic drummer but again, to me their work sounds more derivative than original.

I respect them both as a musicians but idk, their music to me just sounds alright but it doesn't reach me on a personal level. Also he totally ripped off Charles thompson's stage name.

Black Francis = Jack White

Sh*t can't be a coincidence..

I'm a fanboy of Jack White, specifically early White Stripes.

Especially live performances. He's the epitome of what I look for (and wish to emulate) in terms of energy and emotion.

A few years ago, I found myself going thru all the led zep albums looking for this opening riff I had stuck in my head. Without even second guessing myself, I said "ok, this is a Zeppelin song... But which one!?!?"

Long story short, I later discovered by accident that the guitar riff I had in mind was actually the opening riff of The White Stripes' - Icky Thump.

With that said, I still think it's a pretty good song, but derivative for sure...

White Stripes gimmick: they're siblings

Real life stripes: Meg is Jack's ex-wife.
