That snare drum is ecstasy every time it hits it only gets heavier and heavier with each repeat

Producer of Closer wrote something along the lines of: "The essence of rocknroll is the snare"

I can't be arssed to google his name but you can thank him for the snare

How about the Jam? Some of their songs might be closer to that kind of sound you are looking for (such as "That's Entertainment").

Some research indicates there were none who were exactly like Placebo, although my contender for closest sounding would probably be The Wedding Present, judging by their album "Bizarro" from 1989. Some of the guitar/bass playing has a similar vibe to c.1996 Placebo. The album also sounds as if it influenced Radiohead and Interpol.

Another possible contender would be Manic Street Preachers - they were an influence on the emo category, in a similar way to Placebo, and released their first single (which has a punk-influenced feel) in 1988.
