Question I cant sing, but will I be able to?

Hi I'm new.

I am quite a beginner to the world of music. I have been playing keyboard/piano for years, but faaaar from perfect lol. One thing Ive always wanted to be able to do is SING. I'm always singing, in the shower, in the car, but cant sing in tune, and rubbish at karaoke.

And so I thought Id take on a new hobby and get some private singing lessons. I dont want to be a professional singer and know I will never be very good, but I would love to be able to sing in tune and strengthen my vocals, learn my vocal range etc...

But what I would love to know is whether it is worth me spending money on getting lessons? Would it help me sing in tune, or am I doomed for life? As people say "singing is like maths, you can either do it or you cant". lol. What do you all think? Is it possible?

Thanks. x

At least you acknowledge that you can't sing in tune. That means you're not tone deaf and that you can definitely improve.

I've no idea if lessons would help, though.

It's possible to get better, but there's a limit. My older sister is still tone deaf and she's been in the choir throughout high school and college. I wouldn't pay for lessons if I was you.

If you know you're not singing in tune, then you can definetly improve. I used to make recordings of myself singing and playing, let them sit for atleast two days and then listen to improve my form. That's free, but takes time. A vocal coach isn't always a bad idea.

Good luck!

100% agree with this. Thats a great way to teach yourself to sing. Vocal coaching is good if you've already worked out for yourself that you can improve, but remember a vocal coach is also in it for the cash, so is pretty much going to tell you "you'll be fantastic after a year of my coaching.."
