It would be a boring community if everyone listened to the same and the first thing that happens to newcomers shouldn't be attempts at forced conformity by posters like yourself.

If you're sure it really doesn't matter, then maybe you should practice what you believe and consider easing up on the negative feedback.

Anyways, hi SaphiaGlam and welcome to musicbanter

Although you like popular bands, htye don't get that much exposure here - at least I know there are no Queen, Velvet Revolver or Motley Crue reviews out of the currently 704 reviews in the index. Instead of telling you that you should like something else, I'd rather encourage you to keep at it and perhaps write about/review some of the bands you like. Although I'm not a big fan myself, it's a bit ridiculous to not have a Queen review on a music site with as many reviews and interest in music from those times as we have. Also, I'd love to see a hair metal journal or something similar sometime in the future even if I don't have that much appreciation for it myself!
I wasn't trying to force her to listen to anything at all, sorry if I came across that way. It's just that I used too listen to only music from the seventies/eighties like it seems she mostly does, but now I listen to more modern music and I like it a lot. I was just trying to give some suggestions, but if she doesn't like them then I'm not going to make here listen to them.

^Well, it's not just you. Every now and then, I see new guys getting ripped on for not liking whatever bands and artists have the general MB stamps of approval. I've been a bit miffed about it because is it really our job to tear down people's tastes in music and rebuild them to fit our idealistic views? I'd say no - of course not, it's a forum and not a boot camp.

Randomly name-dropping bands and artists as recommendations is generally unproductive I think. As an example, someone who's predominant preference is a taste in 80s hair metal should get recommendations by people who like similarish music - or at least someone who's trying put themselves in the shoes of the person they are recommending stuff to - because then they relate better. What point is there in telling someone who loves hair metal to check out the latest M.I.A. album? The recommendation is not based on any kind of preference - in fact the recommendation sounds pretty random and whether or not the person likes it or not becomes pretty random too. Recommending something which is seemingly unrelated to a person's tastes is something I usually think of egocentrical because you're not taking their tastes into account and still see yourself as some kind of authority because you think that despite that, your recommendation is something the person should listen to.

Anyways, celebrate diversity - not conformity

No I wasn't insulted at all by anyone ever!
I DO infact like M.I.A, surprisingly enough, but I wasn't offended that you wrote her, or that you were nice enough to write a load of musicians that YOU like, that I might want to check out. I personally think if you like something enough to reccommend it to someone else, even if they don't neccessarily like that particular genre, the person receiving the reccomendation should at least give it a go. Just to see. That's how creative debating arises!

^Well, my complaint was mainly about negative feedback on newbs and their tastes. And when I wrote someone who likes hair metal, I wasn't actually trying to describe Saphia, it was meant more as a general scenario although I can see where that went wrong.

As for my complaint regarding recommendations, it's more to do with recommending music without writing anything about them - without mentioning why someone should listen to them or why they should find them interesting. A statement like "band X are really good you should listen to it" coming from someone you don't know and who don't know you means almost nothing. I would never bother checking out a list of random artists with no information about them when I have the luxury of checking out a multitude of recommendations written by people who have made an attempt to be informative and interesting.

There are tons of threads here describing music that might peak your interest
