Boyfriend and I broke up. Got some time to fill...

Hello... I've been slightly lurking and reading old, old posts because I'm discovering music I've never heard of before, and learning more about the culture of knowing good music (history, etc...). Also learning about boards, because a few months ago I knew nothing.

I usually just like the way music makes me feel... like a drug... I don't worry about the influences or the band members or even what the album or tracks are called.... but, I've become more interested in this lately.

I just want to be one of the cool kids. JK. But, I do think I'll be losing many hours here that should be spent on homework, laundry, or sleeping. I hope it doesn't cut into my Facebook time....

ThePhanastasio 02-02-2011 11:16 PM

Welcome, welcome! Hope you really enjoy it here.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of music are you interested in right now? And who are some of your favorites?

Hope that you enjoy the board and stick around!

sillysillymary 02-02-2011 11:25 PM

I listen to allllll sorts of music. Love Pandora for discovering (so this is more like currently listening to... not really all time faves). Some of my Pandora stations are:

Portugal. The man
M83
Nine Inch Nails
Washed Out
Mumford and Sons
Blonde Redhead
Massive Attack
Dubstep
The Bird and the Bee
Ghostland Observatory
Regina Spektor
Foreigner
The Xx
Neil Young
Tom Waits
Miike Snow
Violent Femmes
The Knife
The Beautiful South
Leonard Cohen
Powerman 5000
Crystal Castles

Last CD's I purchased:

Cage the Elephant
Tron Soundtrak
Discovery LP
They Might Be Giants

I'm going to Coachella, so I've been trying to explore bands from the Lineup.

I also use the classical stations to listen to while doing hw or to chill sometimes. Different music for different moods/activities. But, always music.

ThePhanastasio 02-02-2011 11:30 PM

Very cool! I like a lot of the bands you have Pandora stations for - very nice!

I hope that you find this place as good for introducing you to music as Pandora; there are a lot of album clubs and things on the forum that are really good for that. There are also recommendation threads for all genres which have forums, as well as a general recommendation thread. :)

sillysillymary 02-02-2011 11:34 PM

Well thank you for the welcome! I'm honestly a little afraid to say anything... because I just don't know.

Like, you might have thought Mr. Brainwash was awesome until you saw "Exit Through The Gift Shop" and learned that he really just made a profit on all his "friends" ideas, talents, and skills... and then you're a dumba** if you didn't know the originals... Like that.

ThePhanastasio 02-02-2011 11:54 PM

Just jump in and talk about music; people here actually are really nice. There are people who listen to all sorts of music, mainstream or otherwise. It's a really fun forum!

One thing to keep in mind, though - when you're wanting to discuss a particular topic, before starting a thread, use the search feature to see if one already exists. If it does, then go ahead and post in the existing topic; people usually use the "New Posts" feed, which can be found beside the search feature to discuss topics, and your post will still be seen even if the original topic is kind of old.

sillysillymary 02-03-2011 12:06 AM

OK... got it. Actually learned from experience on that one. Thank you.

blanket 02-03-2011 01:07 AM

Of course the newbie guide also explains a lot of stuff and things newbs often have trouble with, like lastfm links in signatures, youtube tags and multi-quoting.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-03-2011 05:27 PM

Hey Baby :pimp:

Someone had to do it

s_k 02-03-2011 05:32 PM

I sort of figured she'd make a good introduction by saying she's single :D

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-03-2011 05:34 PM

Like that makes any difference to me.

s_k 02-03-2011 05:38 PM

It helps, I guess :D

s_k 02-03-2011 06:59 PM

The list is a lot shorter for me :D

But you still score points with those two.
Add bob dylan and you have my three favourite singers who can't sing.

TheBig3 02-03-2011 07:15 PM

Hold on a hot second, you like Waits and Young but not Cohen...wtf is that about?

Dirty 02-03-2011 07:18 PM

So we are just a rebound then huh?

Sweet.

s_k 02-03-2011 07:19 PM

I never really found any song apart from 'so long marianne' that I found particularly interesting. Surprise me ;).
I see Cohen gets quite a bit of credit here, but I don't think I know anyone who listens to his music.
And most of my friends here have waits or at least young records.

Have you listened to "The Future" or "First we take Manhattan"?

I can't imagine you wouldn't like them.

Sneer 02-03-2011 08:00 PM

Or this

storymilo 02-03-2011 08:48 PM

One of the best intro thread titles.

sillysillymary 02-03-2011 09:09 PM

yes... should be doing hw now. I can't possible reply to all of your clever comments... going from memory...

Cohen was definitely in there *sigh*

Waits, Cohen, and Young... love love love and I listen often... but I usually just listen, don't really pay attention to names of songs, or albums and such... so I'm a fan... but I couldn't really talk about them, much.

I sometimes get hooked on certaion songs... "I remember you well, in the Chelsea hotel..." "Don't let it bring you down... its only castles burning... " and with Waits its just the voice. I even watched Jarmusch's (I had to look that up on google to double check) "Down by Law" because he was in it... it was fun and artsy. I watched that with the ex. F that.

Yes- newly single... but likely to stay that way. Mainly because I am bitter and pretty positive at this point that having a relationship with me is sort of like dancing a tango on an airmattress on a bed of nails on a desert island in a snow globe filled with glitter and gumdrops. My favorite game is "Put him to a test that has no solution and don't tell him that he's taking it. Then, berate him for failing." It also helps if he has a psychotic heroin addict ex-fiance who he lies to you about, then you find out half his furniture is HER furniture and she's pissed because she wants her bookcases, then you see that she still has their "couple" photo for her FB profile, then she calls in the middle of the night... all the while he claims that he's over her but his face turns all angry and he can't barely say her name without clenching his teeth, and he refuses to let her know he's in love with someone else. So.... maybe single is a good thing for a while. Also, they both LOVED Velvet Underground (as do millions of others), but I'll be avoiding any conversation surrounding VU. F- VU.

God, it felt good to vent that to strangers over the internet. Anyone recommend some super depressing breakup music? Please, take me just to the verge of suicide, but not quite.

And I'm over casual sex. Who needs that when I have discoverd blogs on the internet. Oh, yeah, MB, you are just the beginning. I shall be ruthless, thorough, and dominating. Watch out. Just kidding... I don't really have time for that.

This is not a rebound (I think that was my favorite response)... but I think its more like a hobby or interest that I should have had all along.

Back to music.... "The Pains of Being Pure at Heart" is my favorite Choachella discovery today. I haven't heard of alot of the bands on the lineup... so its a fun way to discover. But, its tough because I like one song, then listen to another and not so much... its hard to make these decisions so snappily.

storymilo 02-03-2011 09:16 PM

I recently got showed the Pains. It's good stuff... but very twee. May (hopefully) be seeing them soon!

sillysillymary 02-03-2011 11:13 PM

Yeah... I'm still on the fence.

I was also drawn to "The Morning Benders" and I really loved the song Excuses, but then everything else not so much... I don't think its really my style. Will keep trying. I'm not sure of their exact classification.... I like the drums and the flow, but it kind of has a 50s high school dance feeling and Im not so sure about that.

I used to have a playlist of songs for breakups but for the life of me I can't find it but anyways. The songs in my break up playlist they were not depressing they were more cheery and upliftings more like I was better without her type songs.

I remember one song I had on there pretty vividly. It was Cold - Stupid Girl but I can't remember any other ones, I'm sorry :(
