Zappa is Zappa and probably not fusion. If I had to put him in a bag I would put him in rock. (except for his classical stuff)

I like lots of the ones you guys have suggested Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra etc.

Others I used to listen to are:
Alan Holdsworth
Kazumi Watinabe ("spice of life" and "spice of live too")
Bill Brufford made some interesting solo record. (compiled on a disc called "master strokes")
Uzeb (Noisy Nights)
Trilok Gurtu (great Indian/Jazz crossover)

Often fusion music sounds dated as it tends to use many flavours of the day. As a listener sometimes you have to get beyond that.

I just recently started listening to some jazz fusion. primarily soft machine (WOOT). I've heard some Hatfield and the North too. Soft Machine is awesome, though. I love Third. great album.

Zappa is Zappa, but that doesn't mean he's genreless, he just transcends genres.

I have albums 1,2, third, and six. I really found six quite boring compared to 1,2, and third. in the songs, the main tune is exactly the same for the most part. All White is okay, so is groselut, but I got six before third, and I think third made six look bad.

I agree that Six is a bit shabby compared to their earlier efforts.
