Bad Luck - Four (Origin Records, 2018)

Quote:

tone moves from gorgeous to scolding to Pharoah Sanders cries. Icasiano can do it all with his drum kit: bombast, light touches, dense unrelenting low patterns, sermons of light and darkness. The six compositions here are sometimes smooth, sometimes angular, sometimes a cross between tight metal and prog rock; at other times they invoke the patient, caressing ethereality of Sigur Rós, with Welch’s soaring tenor playing the role of the untranslatable, invented language.
Personally, I feel a big Ganelin influence kind of mating with a creepier fusion era Miles.

5/5 serious contender for top ten AOTY

KUZU’S “HILJAISUUS”

https://rempisdorjidamon.bandcamp.com/album/hiljaisuus

Aggressive noisy free jazz trio based out of Chicago. Guitar, sax (alto tenor and baritone), and percussion. - This is an absolute blast. Chicago has got it going on. The hits just keep on coming.

There are parts of this record where the musicians are very aware of each other and those sections come off in a very beautiful modal sort of free jazz say but at other times the sax and the guitar seem like different sound solar systems but those parts are very exciting as well. It’s like it’s firing up different parts of your brain at the same time and no matter what you try to focus on it’s amazing but then the other musician draws your attention. Usually this wouldn’t work so well but the chemistry here is fantastic.
