I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one not attached to a drum.

LEBROBA
ANDREW CYRILLE, WADADA LEO SMITH, BILL FRISELL

Toward the modal spectrum. All-star cast. To put it in context this is on par with Miles’ Jack Johnson. 5/5

****ing insane unbelievable year

Gunhild Seim/Marilyn Crispell/David Rothenberg - Grenseland

Why are the greatest records of 2018 free jazz? Because that’s what all the best musicians are playing. When it rains it pours. Another 5/5 masterpiece.

OH, how the **** do you keep up with all this? I struggle to listen to even a tiny percent of all the music I have saved to hear and I feel like you're a never ending machine.

Thanks

But I don’t have this new stuff stored away and catagorized in my memory like I pretty much really do with jazz from the 40’s to the 70’s.

Like Andrew Cyrille (two up) played on Afternoon of a Georgia Faun and Unit Structures so my listening is already well-informed. Marilyn Crispell may not have all that on her resume but she’s still a powerhouse name. At the end of the year I’ll tuck it all away on a playlist and some of my initial enthusiasm for some records will fade and some will grow. I think the few people who follow my journals know that I tend to present my knowledge as more authoritative than it really is. That said, I haven’t turned my TV on for months and I listen to music A LOT. I divide my time at work between being a prep cook and a line cook. When I do prep I can listen to headphones. That’s more than half my workday. Then when I get home I listen to music pretty much all day. I listen to at least two jazz records everyday and I always make an effort to consider the lineage of the music. Who has played on what records and what style they’re working in (who are their influences). But it’s not like I could just rattle all this **** off the top of my head. I need the reminders that magically appear on my phone.

Thank you for being supportive

...except that she's on nearly 300 albums - close to 100 of which are under her name.

(an early one where she's accompanying Jean Redpath):

It’s hard to know how to approach such a prolific discography but she’s a heavyweight for sure. Appreciate your input, ros.

Helsinki Songs Album by Trygve Seim

This is an easy going 2018 release. Has that 1980’s 1990’s big city commercial radio jazz production. Not avant or free really but if we ever needed open borders now is the time.

This album could almost be approached like an ambient bgm recording except the lyricism of the melodies that borrow from the modal age and successful hints of ethnicity is too attention grabbing. I gave another release from this guy a bad review on lampfighter but this ones a winner if you’re willing to chill.
