SDU and PDU Transitions
As data moves through the network stack, it changes its technical designation based on its state of preparation. The raw data received from an upper layer is known as the Service Data Unit (SDU), which the current layer treats as an untouchable payload. Once that layer attaches its specific control headers, the entire package is redefined as a Protocol Data Unit (PDU).

Layer 4 Segment Creation
At the transport layer, a continuous stream of application data is divided into manageable units called segments. A 20-byte TCP header is attached to each segment, containing 16-bit source and destination ports that act as internal software addresses. This layer also manages sequence numbers and control flags to ensure that the conversation remains reliable and orderly.

Layer 3 Logical Addressing
The network layer takes the transport segment and wraps it inside an IP packet, adding logical shipping labels known as IP addresses. These 32-bit addresses allow routers to determine the best path for the data across independent and diverse networks. This layer also includes a protocol field that tells the receiving machine which transport protocol should handle the data after it is unwrapped.

Layer 2 Framing and Integrity
The data link layer is unique because it appends both a header and a trailer to the packet, creating a frame for local hardware delivery. The header uses 48-bit MAC addresses to target specific devices on a local segment, while the trailer contains a Frame Check Sequence. This trailer allows the receiving hardware to perform a mathematical check to ensure the data was not corrupted during physical transmission.

Recursive Encapsulation and Tunneling
Securing data over public infrastructure often involves tunneling, which is the process of wrapping a passenger protocol entirely inside a carrier protocol. In a VPN "tunnel mode," the original IP packet is encrypted into an unreadable block and hidden behind a new, unencrypted outer header. This creates a layer of camouflage that routes sensitive information through public space without exposing its content.

MTU Constraints and MSS Clamping
Physical network links have a fixed capacity known as the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU), which is generally 1500 bytes. When extra headers from tunneling exceed this limit, routers must fragment the packets, which increases CPU load and risks data loss. To prevent this, administrators use MSS clamping to force devices to negotiate smaller segment sizes, ensuring there is always enough room for protocol overhead.
