FETCHER. 12-28-2010 07:16 PM

My sister drives a 59 plate corsa. I'm not going to lie I prefer the drive of my nearly 11yr old fiesta to her basically brand new corsa, her car just doesn't move, I feel like I'm driving a bucket of **** when I use her car. :(

s_k 12-28-2010 07:22 PM

Ah well, I guess not all corsa's are as slow as that one. Depends on the version you buy.
I've never cared about speed, so if that is all I don't think I would mind.
I drove this for some time:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...F4772Small.jpg
0-60mpg in 22 seconds with a top speed of well... 65?

And now I have a 2 cylinder Citroën Visa as a second car.
So I really don't mind slow cars ;D

flewis 12-28-2010 09:57 PM

a 2009 cobalt LT, bright yellow, perfect gig car, I can fit 2 super reverbs, my pedal board, and 2 or 3 guitars in there!

Dotoar 12-28-2010 10:06 PM

s_k: I've been considering buying a Renault 4 many times actually, but I always have backed out at the last minute since I can't get rid of the feeling that they seem a bit fragile. How did it run?

s_k 12-29-2010 07:30 AM

Technically? They're indestructible. They run really very well. And they're really easy to maintain (huge bonnet, tiny engine, gearbox in front, it's brilliant). Your problem, again, would be rust.
My former father in law bought a R4 round about 1980. A hole had rusted in the middle of one door in less than one year time.
Another downside of the Renault 4 are the brakes. Above 50km/h they are frighteningly bad. They just fade beyond compare. I've heard the brakes that are on the 1.1 liter version (the GTL) are a bit better.

As far as driving goes, it's an absolute joy to drive. The gearbox is just brilliant, the steering is beautiful and the view is incredible. It's really easy to park because of all the windows.

So, if you drive careful and if you can put the car inside, please buy yourself an R4. They are really really nice.

Here's some video of mine:

And here's some footage of my visa

And of our Citroën GSA we sold recently

Dotoar 12-29-2010 07:18 PM

French cars rule! Have you ever happened upon a Citroën AMI6/8?

Dirty 12-29-2010 07:26 PM

I used to drive a Chrysler LeBaron convertible til I wrecked it:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...ets/Car001.jpg

Now I drive a 1994 Honda Integra. This isn't a pic of my actual car, but it looks exactly the same minus the hubcaps

Nope, unfortunately.
I've had quite some french cars now.
A Peugeot 205, Citroën ZX, Renault 5, Renault 4, Citroën Visa 11RE and the Visa Club I own now. The GSA belonged to my dad.
My Visa is now in our backyard garage, so I won't buy another rust-sensitive vehicle ;). I'm glad it's got a roof over it's head.

I really want a citroën BX some time. Love the way they drive.

Dotoar 12-29-2010 07:46 PM

Those two drive around videos were strangely soothing. I could actually sense the smell of the interior of the Visa, that chilly moist slowly heating up among the ageing 80's plastic. And the stepping on in the tunnel, I like to do that as well, preferrably during summer evenings with the side window winded down.

Funnily enough you could as well have been driving around in the countryside around here in Närke. The landscapes are very similar with all the flatness and croplands. Only the road markings give it away, at least until you're entering the residential areas.

s_k 12-29-2010 07:52 PM

Susteren is actually a pretty nice place to live.
And I guess that when it snows it's really hard to distinct it from Sweden:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...es/sneeuw8.jpg

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...es/sneeuw4.jpg

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...s/sneeuw5b.jpg

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...s/IMG_2507.jpg

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...s/IMG_2546.jpg

Damn, I love snow.
It's melting now. Hope it'll start snowing again soon.

Eitherway, vehicles.
I usually drive very relaxed. I don't mind stepping on it for fun, but i'm a very easy going driver. Never agressive.
When it snows I don't mind taking a corner sideways though. I love car control, I love parking in tight spaces and taking tricky corners as beautifully as possible. I don't care for driving fast, but I do make a sport out of driving comfortable.
That's why I don't care for cars that are sporty. I love soft damping on cars. I don't get why people lower their cars untill they're all bumpy and shaky.

Dotoar 12-29-2010 08:08 PM

Oh yes, those pics could as well have been taken a couple of kilometers from here. I might as well if I get my lazy ass out before sundown. The countryside is literally just around the corner of my neighbourhood.

And regarding driving, well, it is an artform in itself. Like music.

s_k 12-29-2010 08:15 PM

The lower two pics are actually taken in front of my house.
As I said, I like where I live :).
(I don't care for cities, love the countryside).

And driving can be an artform.
Haha, when my ex-girlfriend fell asleep on the passenger's seat I'd try to change gears so subtle that her head wouldn't move.
I hate automatic gearboxes, too. As I said, I like a challenge.
And to me, the feel of a gearbox is a part of the feel of a car.

Dotoar 12-29-2010 10:35 PM

I was on my way to make a remark about the importance of handling the lever in order to keep the girl satisfied along the ride, oh well... :p:

s_k 12-30-2010 08:39 AM

Asleep I said!
(not like that ever stopped me :D).

Ex-girlfriend I said
(that stopped me most of the time, yeah)

FETCHER. 12-30-2010 10:52 AM

the snow here is gone for now which is sad. Having a car + snow = fun. French cars are overhyped. I'm just biased by Ford. I quite like Renaults (clio sport 182 ) but have been told theyre also pretty problematic :( the clio sport is extremely expensive to repair if anything goes wrong with them. my friend had to get rid of hers because the exhaust needed repairing/replacing constantly.

That's too bad about the LeBaron. My mom drove one for years - I grew up with that car. My dad was always changing cars (he leases them for the most part), but the LeBaron was always there. I learned to drive with that car, and was hoping to get it once I was fully licensed, but it died :(. So I got my dad's car, the only car I ever remember him actually buying - a blue 2000 Volvo S70-T sedan, fully loaded. In hindsight it was a better choice than the LeBaron, although not a convertible. It has a sunroof though!

French cars are always incredibly reliable here and my two Japanese Mitsubishi's were nothing but trouble. It's a reverse world :D.

downwardspiral 12-31-2010 06:50 AM

Feet.

s_k 01-03-2011 03:46 PM

You drive feet?

Zer0 01-03-2011 04:15 PM

I think he meant Fiat ;)

s_k 01-03-2011 04:21 PM

I think he means he walks everywhere ;D.

Stone Birds 01-03-2011 04:52 PM

an imaginary hovercraft that can only hover .00001 mm above the ground.

it's blue, green, red, and orange. has a painting of Justin Vernon on one door and Peter Gabriel on the other.

That was me before I got a car. Also got everywhere by taking the streetcar and the bus.

Bloozcrooz 01-03-2011 05:11 PM

I drink to much to drive legally. My nikes do the trick often though lol. Cars are overated. Ive crashed plenty of them to know.

s_k 01-03-2011 05:11 PM

I never really liked walking.
It's okay if there's a lot of variation, but most of the time it's slow and boring.

s_k 03-21-2011 08:56 AM

We went on a trip yesterday to get this old Volvo:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/IMG_3470.jpg
It's my dad's car, but I'll be the one driving in it, as usual :D

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/IMG_3468.jpg
It's very blue and very retro :D

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/IMG_3463.jpg
Even my cat loves it :)

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/IMG_3466.jpg
That interior is very, very eighties. And the seats are just brilliant.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/IMG_3472.jpg
Mean clean engine machine!

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...o/IMG_3473.jpg
Five doors ftw!

The Virgin 03-21-2011 09:00 AM

i envy you guys for you can drive. i have no idea how to even turn the car on.
i mean, being a driver is the hardest thing on earth, personally. you have to hold the wheel, and then you have to look at the side mirrors and stuff, then you have to step on a lot of pedals and all the buttons you need to push. it's too much of a job for me so i never bother attending any driving lessons.

Howard the Duck 03-21-2011 09:21 AM

i drive a Proton Iswara - cheapest one in the market (cars depreciate, ya know, it's nothing more than a function for me)

i would like to get a 70s muscle car like a Maserati or a Dodge Viper

s_k 03-21-2011 09:36 AM

That's why I always buy seriously old second hand cars. Near to no depreciation.

I love driving! When I first learned to drive, I was intimidated by it, but then I practiced. That's all it takes, really.

s_k, how is that car? Does it drive nice? It probably does - Volvo's are absolute tanks, they last forever. My S70 is getting up to 120,000 kms and it still going great. Due for an oil change soon though.

Thom Yorke 03-21-2011 12:46 PM

I don't have my own car but when I'm at home I drive my mommy's Envoy around and pretend it's mind.

crukster 03-21-2011 12:49 PM

How can you say this without even trying?
There's so many people who can drive who are probably ten times more stupid than you are. There's no reason I can think of why you shouldn't be able to drive :)

I meant to answer this posting with an onboard video, but it went dark and my parents got friends over, so the car still has it's air filter lying around the back of our hourse. We're still doing some (minor) things to improve it. Hope I can make a video tomorrow.

Yes it has that tanky feel to it as all volvo's do, even though it's designed and built in the Netherlands and based on a Dutch car, the DAF.

As you can see this was mainly a Volvo 343:

The DAF 77 was never produced.

After the 343 came the 340 we have :)

Yeah it's pretty big. I just love the feel of it though. I find it's so weird to drive any other car after driving it. Terrible on gas though.

s_k 03-21-2011 09:19 PM

I would probably feel guilty for driving something like that.
But this is not America :)

Howard the Duck 03-21-2011 09:19 PM

i have to admit i hate driving, though

KL is perpetually jammed, parking is virtually impossible everywhere
