The potential for someone being in possession of a firearm illegally (happens all the time in the states as far as people with felonies are concerned) is higher than the potential for me to be able to protect myself in that scenario with only a baseball bat.

While I know that outright bans of all firearms make it a lot harder to obtain firearms, I still don't feel comfortable letting my ability to protect myself by the most effective means be taken away by a government who's military has the right to use them under its command.
If it ever came down to it, I'd want to be able to defend myself from my own government as well as a common thug.
To be stripped of all relevant self-protective means, as a citizen, would make me feel a lot less safe and a lot more dependent.

THANK-YOU. They seem to listen to you..can you also explain that owning a firearm doesnt make you a redneck?

It can also indicate that you're a gangster.

A gangster that uses a finely crafted Colt Revolver? Not likely..

Knocking someone out and then calling for them to be taken into custody > Taking somebody's life.

Well, it might be a culture shift. I've never felt unsafe here, and Manchester can be a rough and tumble place. Especially in areas closer to the City. I've been mugged twice for no apparent reason, luckily they were just idiots and I took care of them no problem, if it was someone other than a little knob, I would've been in trouble. But does that mean if I could I'd legally pull out a fire arm and shoot him down to the ground? No.

Do you honestly think if someone was in your house late at night, trying to steal valuables, you could pull a gun out of your draw, go downstairs and shoot him dead (if he attacked you/didn't GTFO of course.)

I think a weapon like a baseball bat would be more than adequate..

well yeah you're kind of buggered now because you've allowed guns from the get-go. centuries of allowing people to own guns has created a state in which anyone can own a killing machine to "protect themselves." when you factor in how irrational people can be enough of the time for them to misuse that gun for purposes other than self-defense, its apparent how dangerous it is to have a country full of guns.

the only times i've ever heard of gun related violence here, they were gang-related. there is no reason to own a gun for "self-defense" here, probably because hardly anyone has guns. hmmmMMMmmmm.

shut the **** up. you've proven your unintelligence multiple times over; people "listen to him" because he has a grasp on rational thinking and can make a well-worded post.

I think that someone assuming all people who own firearms are rednecks would be ridiculous to say the least, but it's important to understand the differences of perception between countries who advocate certain things and countries that do the opposite for those things.
The regional opinion is going to be reflective of that.
I simply urge people to use logic to decide their choices in those matters and do what's best for them in their own situations.

For most of us in the U.S. (minus the leftist political party and its followers that vehemently oppose guns) the right to bear arms is extremely important to us. Not only because it's written in the constitution that founded our very principles as a free nation, but because it ultimately says that self preservation is an individual responsibility and right that can not be regulated or imposed upon, and should be proportional to the threat.

I realize that ridding a nation of all firearms proportionalizes a majority of a threat to lesser weapons across the board, but since we cannot prevent every illegal possession of a disproportional weapon, the possibility remains that there will be citizens who are improperly prepared to defend their own lives. And that's what I'm against.
Saving other lives is good... but the first one I'm going to try and save is my own.

I think I should have that right, and I do NOT think I should have to rely on the government to do that for me.

Seriously. Settle down. You look like a loud mouthed idiot.

His rational thinking is identical to mine. I just didnt type up a massive paragraph on a music forum lol.

Alright guys, I think we can discuss this without being too insulting.

Now that I think of it, we're majorly off topic. Anyone want to make a thread about this in the current events forum? Or are we just about spent?

It's an interesting topic for me anyway, but whatever.

Precisely my thought. Why not eliminate the middle man?

I thought that. After I finished my post, I had to look up to check the thread title.
