Funnily enough, I believe the reason for the British driving on the left side of the road, originates to before the time of cars.
Travellers on horseback would ride on the left side, to enable them to draw their sword quickly, which would give the sword bearer a better chance of defending themselves in the event of an attack.

Yup. On escalators it's also good ettiquette (though it's only generally observed in london) for people to stand on the right side so that people in a hurry can run down the left. Same goes for moving floorways, I'd presume.
