Car Question

So I've been car-less since 2008. At this point I'm in a position financially to consider driving regularly again. Heres my question though. I have a 2000 Altima in my parents driveway that likely hasn't been touched in two years. At least a year and a half. I'm planning to go down and check up on it, but do you think its even worth sinking money into?

Whats that amount of time do for damage?

Would it be worth investing in? Depends on what's wrong with it, if anything. If the only issue is that it hasn't been run for that amount of time, then you may only need to replace the battery and change the oil and other fluids. If that's the case, then it's definitely worth it seeing as that would be the extent of initial maintenance costs.

There shouldn't be any damage from it just sitting there.

Nope. (unless the engine was in really bad shape and corrosion got inside the engine)
You'll just want to make sure the tires are at their proper pressure, get the oil and oil filter changed, maybe the tranny fluid too, and you may end up wanting to drain the gas tank and putting new fuel in it if the fuel in it isn't firing up when you try to start the car, although I'm not too sure about whether gas goes "stale" or not.
I wouldn't worry about the air filter, since the car hasn't been running.
Jump the battery if necessary. If it doesn't hold a charge after running the car for a while, you'll probably have to replace it. There should be an LED indicator light on the battery to let you know if it's still good.

When the fluids and oil filter are changed, run the engine for a good while so the oil distributes around the engine and everything warms up nicely, then take her around the block to make sure the transmission is doing what it's supposed to do. If everything checks out, you should be good.

I think it would also be a good idea to look at the tires themselves too. Changes in temperature can damage the rubber if the car's not being used regularly, and so can the weight of the car. Check to see how much tread is left and if there are cracks, especially in the area where the tires are touching the ground, if you say the car hasn't been moved in awhile. If there's a crack, you should get new tires. Also, if the tires are as old as the car (10 years), you should get a new set. It's not really a good idea to drive with tires that are 10 or more years old. But if the tires aren't that old and look pretty good, it would be a good idea to get them re-balanced so they wear evenly.
