Expect to have almost too much fun and be sure to have a spotter in case you want to go rape your mother or something like that.

Make sure to have a nice, calm setting, but also prepare for having something to do, like go out into the woods or paint or whatever, once you got the hang of it.
And do it with people you know really well and feel really comfortable with.

I'd also recommend to have as much Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons as possible, but that might be a little to much for the first time.

This. Emphasis on having something to do and somewhere nice to do it. The thing with mushrooms is that they're basically extreme sensory amplifiers, everything you experience hits you so much harder. In smaller doses (~2 grams) you're not likely to hallucinate much but something as simple as staring at raindrops on a window can become an overwhelmingly beautiful moment. With larger doses (~4 grams and above) it gets to the point where your environment becomes very flexible, everything in your vicinity is subject to change depending on your emotional state, that can be beautiful and fantastic or unimaginably horrifying. Your hallucinations depend entirely on your mood and setting, and remember that hallucinations are full body, not just visual. Your thoughts, your vision, what you hear, what you feel, how you perceive the people around you, it's all very liquid. If the weather outside is decent, and you have somewhere safe to explore, like your backyard or somewhere that isn't infested with cops, definitely seize that opportunity. Being outside is very preferable with mushrooms since it's much softer on your senses, the wind, the soft grass, the natural light, the changing sky, it all helps keep your mind away from thoughts that may spin out of control and ruin the experience.

Also, keep hydrated. (EDIT: Mondo beat me to it) Have some of your fave music at the ready. And if you plan on hanging at home tell everyone in advance that you won't be there! Last thing you want is someone deciding to pop by while you're peaking.

And if you end up feeling nauseous towards the beginning don't worry. It's pretty common for a lot of people. If it gets really bad and persists too long and is killing the high just drink a large glass of water and then make yourself barf.

Turning off one's cell phone might be a good idea as well.

Really?
I often found food and drinks to taste really weird and the general act of eating felt somehow unneccessary.

It's just delicious for me. Though there's pretty large gaps between eating/drinking something, and I'm never really too hungry (acid can give me munchies though). One time on mushrooms I had a bottle of gatorade that took me six hours to finish. But the taste and feeling of having an already delicious and refreshing beverage (eg cranberry juice) splashing down your throat is something else, at least for me. Liquids are just cool.

We use to experiment with mixing foods while tripping just trying to find the weirdest possible flavors we could come up with.

The winner? Original fig newtons and plain beer (bud, coors, miller, etc.) There's some funky ass reaction thing that happens when you mix those two. Try it sometime. Really.
