1. The moment (a song, a video, an event) you knew you were out of touch with pop culture cause you've grown old. Like what The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show would be to you if you were a Sinatra guy born in 1927, that kind of thing.

Learning that not only did Billie Eilish exist but was the current thing.

2. Have you ever met a Fall fan IRL? What was the weirdest thing about them?

No.

3. A famous person you find unfortunate-looking. Who you think looks like dog$hit

MLK has too tall of a head.

4. Favorite soccerball player

**** off.

5. If you could live for a year in a country you have never visited and don't speak the language... In other words, which country you vibe with purely based on your fantasy of what it's like

Sigh. Japan.

6. Favorite Trump tweet (take your pick)

Whatever was the first Iggy Azelia video I saw. Made me utterly confused while also horny which I think is the ultimate dad response.

I like some songs by Billie Eilish btw. I guess by the time she broke out I no longer had any illusions of being au courant with whatever the youngs are into

2. Have you ever met a Fall fan IRL? What was the weirdest thing about them?

I have a good one. In a class I was TAing ages ago there was a kid who grew up in Britain and spoke English with a northern accent. Obsessed with the Fall, to a lesser degree Morrissey, and Man United, very intense guy. He was gay and turned out he had little time for women in general: when Sonic Youth broke up he went on a twitter rant about how Kim isn’t the talented one and it’s all about Thurston. I think he wanted to go to Paris and be an artist or whatever but I lost sight of him. A very intense, opinionated and unpleasant guy, just like Fall fans should be imo.

Need I say who was his least favorite member of the Fall?

3. A famous person you find unfortunate-looking. Who you think looks like dog$hit

Whenever I want to $hit on some Montreal neighborhood I say "they really like Celine Dion over there, they find her a great artist and a beautiful woman"

4. Favorite soccerball player

Mine is close to Marie's (btw Karlsson-on-the-Roof was my favorite children's book too, it was huge in the USSR): Finland. I love the north and they're the quirkiest of the bunch. For Russians it's kind of a liminal space between Russia and the West but stranger and less knowable than either, despite clear similarities in architecture (during the Cold War they filmed spy films in Helsinki as a stand-in for Moscow).

6. Favorite Trump tweet (take your pick)

Right now it's between these two

I recall firmly raising my eyebrows when I saw Spice Girls' "Wannabe" on MTV in 1996. That was when I decisively tuned out of broadcast media and pop culture forever. Haven't heard much of anything new since.
I love what John Lydon had to say about them

Quote:
Predictably, Lydon is just as dismissive of modern rock music, in particular Oasis. "I like them as chaps, but I loathe their music," he says. "My mum and dad used to play that Sixties s**t and it drove me mad then. The Sex Pistols opened a lot of doors 20 years ago, now I have to sit back and watch the likes of Oasis close them. They're so naff."

The Spice Girls, on the other hand, get a Lydon seal of approval. "I like the Spice Girls because they don't pretend to be anything they're not," he explains. "They're just good fun and they make kids' lives a bit less miserable. The Spice Girls are music hall in the same way that the Pistols were," Lydon grins. "They are so English, they could not come from anywhere but this country." He cackles. "In fact, I like them so much I bought the dolls."

Just as vintage can have an undercurrent of recalcitrance towards fashion, similarly it is possible for rock nostalgia to contain dissident potential. If Time has become annexed by capitalism's cynical cycles of product shifting, one way to resist that is to reject temporality altogether. The revivalist does this by fixating on one era and saying: 'Here I make my stand.' By fixing identity to the absolute and abiding supremacy of one sound and one style, the revivalist says, ' This is me.'
Sounds like something Mark Fisher would write.

Oh you're quite right! Occulthawk recommended that I read Ghosts of My Life. I secured a copy but need to pick it back up. Thanks!

There is a first for everything lol.

1. Which team do you want to win the World Cup?

2. What book are you reading right now? Or if you’re not reading anything, what tv show are you watching?

3. Have you ticked off anything on your bucket list? If so, what?

4. Do you have any weird personality traits or quirks?

5. What’s your favourite way to listen to music and why? Eg. Commuting

6. Would you go to the moon given the chance? Why or why not?

1. Which team do you want to win the World Cup?

Anyone except England. God please no, not England! We'll never hear the end of it!

2. What book are you reading right now? Or if you’re not reading anything, what tv show are you watching?

Hmm. I'm currently reading my own stories to Karen, so dunno if that counts. Also reading The Great Famine: History, Ideology and Rebellion by Christine Kinealy. It's pretty dry and boring to be honest. I've read better.

3. Have you ticked off anything on your bucket list? If so, what?

I don't even have a bucket, never mind a bucket list. If I did have a bucket, you can bet it would have a hole in it.

4. Do you have any weird personality traits or quirks?

I AM a weird personality trait or quirk. I make soft animals talk and dance for Karen, is that weird? One of them also attacks me for her entertainment. Um.

5. What’s your favourite way to listen to music and why? Eg. Commuting

Generally with my ears.

6. Would you go to the moon given the chance? Why or why not?

No, because so far man has not developed the ability to walk on green cheese.
