Considering you live in Scotland, I think it's probable you've encountered some of these. They are unpleasant, but not dangerous.

I've been taking up trawls for studies and sometimes, we've gotten hundreds of these in our catches, so I've been arms deep in this species of jellyfish for hours. I don't think it's particularly bad and have no problem swimming around them (well, I usually pick them up and throw them away), but some people might react more strongly to them than I do. On the other hand, I'm tormented by mosquito bites, but a couple of my friends don't even notice them.

That's not actually a jellyfish, but a colony of highly specialized and differentiated little organisms working together. I've heard stings from them are quite bad. Did it take long before the pain went away?

They are from the same phylum as the "ordinairy" jellyfish, Cnidaria. The other "jelly phylum" is Ctenophora, popularly called comb jellies known for their often colourful cilia or "combs" which they use for propulsion.

To everyone else, sorry about the little off-topic 101 on jellies

Nope, I made it back to the boat unscathed. That jellyfish (or glob of microorganisms ) that you got stung by looked pretty wicked. Portugese Man of War... good God. I really couldn't say which ones were floating by me- they just looked kinda pink.

Well thank you for clearing that up for me. It may not be a jellyfish, but it sure does hurt like hell to get stung by one. The only thing I can compare the pain to would be if your legs were covered from heel to waist in fire ants, and they are all biting you simultaneously. Yeah...that's about right. The pain lasted for quite a while and it left scars for the longest time, but those have long since gone away now.
