Oppressive yes, but I'd say more that it's nearly impossible for someone from another culture to tell someone that what they're doing might not be the best way to do things. Especially when there is a history of power disparity, because there is simply no way to divorce the "mansplaining" from that power disparity.

Edit: What if you lived somewhere where the public schools refused to teach evolution and they only taught creationism and they segregated class rooms by race and they wouldn't allow black people to go with white people to the prom?

Yeah no that's really the point. You're telling parents how to raise their children. You don't think they take that personally? You think they won't get pissed when you tell them that they're guilty of child abuse?

Large amounts of the human population think that corporal punishment is not only productive but desirable and moral. Do you think that telling them that their entire parenting culture is wrong is productive? Do you think that they will listen to you and appreciate you telling them that it is immoral in the way that they have raised the human beings in which they have dedicated their lives to the betterment of and who are the personification of their ability to love?

We've had such a strong cultural shift against racism with in the past 100 years what makes you think a strong cultural shift against hitting kids wouldn't work?

OMG I hope it will. I just think self-righteous attitudes like elphenor's are absolutely not the way to go. Those who consider it acceptable to hit their kids basically have to be convinced that those who don't are raising children who are at least of as much worth as their own. In my experience they do not believe that is true, but the tide will not be turned by elitists like elph.
