Thank you for introducing me to the world of Middlemarch. I'm only a quarter of the way through, but will finish if it's the last thing I do.

Can we answer with three different ones tomorrow?
Of course you can! I'd be happy if you listed three different ones every day, Lisna. I need to expand my reading list.

1. Go to your bookshelves (or wherever you keep books), close your eyes and randomly grab a book. Open the book to page 30 and quote the first full sentence on the page.
Quote:
On receipt of this message, Henry at once sent Urswick to the French court to gain permission to enter France, which was readily obtained.
2. You can keep only 3 books for the rest of your life. Which would they be?
God Talks With Arjuna: The Bhagavad Gita by Paramahansa Yogananda
The Complete Essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson
Please Kill Me by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain (too juicy and entertaining to exclude)

3. What is your ethnic background?
Scottish, Danish, German (Dad), Irish, Italian (Mom)

4. Describe one of the most embarrassing moments in your life.
I've had lots of embarrassing moments in my life. One at about age 12, while walking down the street and my sister’s friend shouted hello and waved from across the street – and I walked smack-dab into a steel signpost. I tried to act naturally, hoping he hadn’t noticed (lol?), but he crossed the street and rushed for a cup of ice from a deli because a bump arose on my forehead. I was very shy at that age so was mortified by the whole situation (although grateful for his help).

5. What do you consider the ultimate comfort food?
McCann’s Irish oatmeal with chopped toasted pecans and honey

6. What’s the last movie you watched in the theater?
I think it was Rocket Man.

You couldn't get more random. The room is in darkness and I reached around for a book I couldn't even see. Here's what I got.

"These were good boys, well-trained with their fists, but not experienced at dealing with real incidents, not just practice-bouts."

The City by Jane Gaskell, Book Four of the Atlan Saga.

2. You can keep only 3 books for the rest of your life. Which would they be?

The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
The Complete Works of Charles Dickens
The Complete Sherlock Holmes

(sorry for cheating but they are single volumes bound as one book!)

3. What is your ethnic background?

I've never researched it, but I know I was born in Ireland and my ancestors were kings of Wicklow, so bow down peasants!

4. Describe one of the most embarrassing moments in your life.

Ah. I was waiting at the bus stop when I saw a colleague's car. She stopped, so I thought great! A lift! Just as I got close she pulled off. Never saw me. I ended up running along the road in traffic after her car for about two minutes, mostly because I was too embarrassed to go back to the bus stop where everyone would laugh at me. Which I eventually had to do anyway.

5. What is your ultimate comfort food?

Chocolate, chocolate and, oh what's that other thing? Oh yeah. Chocolate.

6. What is the last film you watched in the theater?

It's been years. Maybe The Phantom Menace? Not sure.

Skip.

2. You can keep only 3 books for the rest of your life. Which would they be?
I'm gonna go with OHs thinking on this, either super long or complicated or something I've been postponing to read forever so let's say: Belle du Seigneur - Albert Cohen, The magic mountain - Thomas Man and either Ulysses by Joyce or Infinite Jest by DFW (both of which I started and gave up on soon)...or In search of lost time? That one seems longer.

3. What is your ethnic background?
100% white and Slavic. Probably inbred to be honest, 99% of my ancestors are from the same island (one came from the neighboring island, that's about as diverse as we get ).

4. Describe one of the most embarrassing moments in your life.
One of the latest exams I had in college, the written part I apparently aced (got an A) and then didn't know a single answer in the oral part. After the first couple of questions my brain just froze. There are more embarrassing ones but who wants to share that?

5. What is your ultimate comfort food?
Pizza.

6. What is the last film you watched in the theater?
Tenet. Waste of money. The sound design was awful, made the whole experience extremely uncomfortable.

I have The Magic Mountain and Ulysses on my shelves and haven't read them, either. I'm a champion at buying books and not reading them.

Yes! And "The characters, moving through the book, glitter as they turn their different facets toward us".
