well it's kinda funny to me cause being the manipulative schemer I am I planted the seed in my mom/teacher's ear once I heard about ADD. It sounded like a perfect excuse for my **** grades... So I told my mom and she told my teachers and instead of switching classes they prescribed me adderall. I was convinced I had scammed them so I didn't even take the meds for more than a month.... Never refilled the bottle and tbh never felt anything when I was talking it anyway. Seemed like a waste to me. Now as an adult I'm thoroughly convinced I actually do have ADD but am still hesitant to try to get on adderall... If I lived with it for this long why tempt myself with a pill I can easily crush and snort

I was also diagnosed with ADD and refused to take that bull**** too.

I was just like nope I got my own drugs.

Word. I’d say the last thing you need is a speed addiction with an unlimited supplier.

I actually did take it.. for like a month... And didn't notice any difference so I figured why bother with it. Also didn't believe ADD was real cause I was the one who planted the seed for an excuse. So I figured I probably didn't even need the pills. But in took em anyway and didn't notice anything different.

I was 12 years old though so I might've just been overlooking the affects

It's kinda true though. At the very least it's over-diagnosed on a massive scale in the states.

Stick a bunch of 10 year old boys in a room where they are meant to sit still and stay quiet for 8 hours and then call it a behavioral problem when they can't abide, or when they get home and release all their pent up energy and their mom thinks they're just out of control... take them to the doctor, get an ADD/ADHD diagnosis, put him on pills, problem solved. A developing brain stunted by chemicals in order to make the kid easier to control.

It's as scientific as Aspergers.

Yep that's absolutely true, the way it's (over)diagnosed is a shame. Nevertheless things like ADD are 'real' afaik and that's just undermining the validity of it (I mean the overdiagnosing trend). I know little about psychology though

Actually a psychologist once suggested diagnosing me with ADD which in my case is bull**** lol

I’m not like super hardline about it or anything. Definitely agree with Wolf though. In my case, I was already able to focus on long complicated novels and the test was literally like five seconds: close your eyes and hold your hand steady. My hand floats up and down and it’s like “Drug him!”

That doesn’t mean the entire disorder is a farce though. Idk what’s up in other people’s brains.

True. That's the difficulty with diagnosing any mental disorder of course. And especially when medication gets involved and parents have a personal conflicting interest it should be handled very carefully, but from what I've experienced and heard the people who are in the position to make a first diagnosis are often incompetent. I think I once told you the story of how a psychologist told me that I can't have any form of autism 'because you looked me in the eye when you shook my hand, and you're able to go to college'

This is one of the most true things I've ever read on MB. Props to you Steph for calling it like you see it.

I had a lot of friends in elementary/middle school who acted out and were always trying to start trouble. Because school has not necessarily been devised for young boys, and it's mostly women running the school system, they have trouble with young boys and eventually get tired of dealing with them.

So, they talk with the parents about their behavior, they take them to the doctors, and the doctors are more than happy to prescribe them pills to "fix" their behavior.

Drug the kids so your life is easier. It's pretty nasty business. I remember having friends whose personality would change drastically when they took these medications. And the teachers would even make nonchalant comments in front of other kids like "[xxxx] obviously hasn't taken his medication today".

I ****ing hated primary school. Just a bunch of glorified babysitters.
