Therefore, the next time I get arrested, they should google me in their super secret system, see that I'm a hard working man trying to support a family and not taking the easy way out (aka welfare/wic/foodstamps/etc...) and let 2 grams of bud in my fucking pocket slide.

Contrary to popular belief, welfare is NOT the easy way out. Welfare is legalized slavery.

That.... is ****ing dumb.

What is your frame of reference to make a statement like that? I can see someone saying "minimum wage is legalized slavery", or something of the sorts, but how the hell is welfare and slavery even remotely connected?

You know how the hell welfare and slavery is even related?

I will give you the basic gist of what the **** happens in welfare since you don't seem to know much about it.

You go through some troubling times and lose your job. You are on the brink of being homeless so you go to the DSS office to apply for assistance.

They help you find a new apartment which they pay for, they pay your utilize, you also qualify for food stamps. Then they shove you into this program called WEP. WEP is work that you have to do in order to keep your benefits. They send you to some random job to do work for some company that has no intentions of having you when they can get you to work for 1 dollar a day. You HAVE to do this job or else you will lose all of your benefits. When you get your foodstamps, they give you 30 bucks in cash along with your food stamps and you get stuck in a cycle where you have to show up for this stupid WEP work and doing this slave labor is counter productive to your actual job search.

That sounds almost unbearable.

People having to work for a place to live and something to eat is unjust. Someone should really do somehting about that.

Sounds a lot like having a damn job if you ask me.

So by your logic, abolishing modern day "slavery" means stopping the welfare program...

Seems like an easy fix.

No, I'm not saying get rid of welfare, they just need to re-structure it so people aren't so dependant on it. Instead of sending them to that ****ty ass WEP program job that only pays 1 dollar a day. I'm sure you'd love to work for 1 DOLLAR A DAY!!!

They need to work on introducing transitional jobs and push for more training. it's a bit similar but with the transitional job they will actually get hired and be able to provide for themselves and be able to get off of welfare all together.

Welfare is a good program as far as for people needed it temporarily and for emergency situations but the rest of it is set up to keep people on the system because for Employers it's big business and THEY are the ones making so much money off of temp. hiring TANF workers. They get grant money and tax breaks for doing this.

Vanilla warns everyone for the 50th time not to turn Spill Your Guts into a chat thread. Less than a page later, a few mods and some others are doing exactly what they were asked not to do.

Good discussion going on in that mathematical thread. Closed by BD.

Sometimes things make zero sense.

Ok welfare isn't legalized slavery. That's a retarded statement. It's there to help people out... So they are working and getting free housing, utilities, and food. Where would they be without welfare?? Surely not living in a paid-for apartment and getting free food. Crash is exactly right. Lol, sounds like a damn job to me. If they want to go to school or do something else with their lives, then they are gonna have to work extremely hard and find a way to make it happen. But a government program that helps millions of people by giving them homes, food, and a job is somehow a bad thing?? and slavery? :bonkhead:

One of my issues with welfare is just that it provides hardly any incentive for a lot of people to even get off of it. I said this in another thread but I'll repeat a little bit. Basically, you work hard at your low-end job to get a raise, then you lose government benefits so it cancels out. So I think a lot of people just grow content with where they are at in their social status since working hard for a raise doesn't gain them much of anything.

I saw that but I said I'd shut up for once and not mention it and even if I did attempt to mention it in the thread, it would probably just get deleted. Great system!

Okay, put yourself in their shoes! Would you be content living a life like that? never having any extra money to buy whatever you wanted or get a car or anything of that nature? People that aren't on welfare think it's a free fucking ride when it isn't. I'm not on it but I have to deal with and have conversations with people that ARE on it so that's why I know all of this information.

Everyone would like the extra money, but you're making it sounds like welfare is an evil when it's a very good thing. It sounds like you want welfare to be a free ride and the government shoudl just give all these poor people loads of money. They give them a home and pay for all of their food, seriously what else do you want them to do?? They work so they can contribute to society and earn what they are receiving. I don't think it's a free ride and I don't think it's a bunch of lazy people either, but most of these people are happy just to have a shelter and food. The government does so much for these people and I don't understand why you have to make it into some sort of evil when without welfare most of these people would be dead or in prison.

The term welfare has a negative stigma attached to it, in my opinion largely because there are so many people abusing it. AKA the people who drive a Lex and roll up with food stamps. I can't remember the exact statistics, but in public polling when the question was asked "Do you support welfare," the support received was very low. And when the question asked was "Do you support government assistance to the poor" the support received was very high. And they are the SAME THING. Just something interesting I learned.
